One of my favorite jazz recordings, May 17, 2002
This review is from: The Music (Audio CD)
These guys were hitting on all cylinders here. Excellent playing all the way around. It seems that Jeff Hamilton keeps showing up on recordings that I love. He has to be one of the best drummers in jazz today. He propels these guys to great levels of playing with subtle brush strokes that swing hard. Some excellent solos from the Claytons and the great pianist Bill Cunliff. Bill is one of those piano players that nobody has heard of and deserves more recognition. I wish these guys would have made more recordings.

You can NOT go wrong with the Clayton Brothers . . . EVER., November 14, 2009
This review is from: The Music (Audio CD)
I want to know what Mrs. Clayton put in her food when she cooked for these boys. The music meanders and drives its way into your soul and holds your heart while it takes you through every emotion. This music is tactile.
John Clayton has Ray Brown's influence, but he's picked up a bit of Count Basie in his choice of colors. When he bows his bass, he owns me.
Jeff Clayton . . . and Cannonball Adderley. . . Jeff's sound is that big and full with deep emotion. You can hear his heart exposed on notes in "Misty".
Jeff Hamilton is a wizard on the drums. I saw him a couple of times with Monty Alexander. Monty would play something on the piano and Jeff would echo it on the drums . . . on key . . . (He tunes his drums?) Wizard.
If you like thinking man's music . . . this CD will play nicely with your mind.
I recommend it HIGHLY.
