4.0 out of 5 stars A Perfectly Creepy Mood-setter
If you're a horror fan of either George Romero or Dario Argento, you probably have this CD already or will soon buy it regardless of how highly I recommend it. I'll try and tailor this review to those of you who are curious about this Goblin CD and would like to know more before buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars nice introduction to Goblin
DRG have given a nice intro to the works of Goblin and as the series progesses, you see more outtakes and examples from other, more obscure albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Perfectly Creepy Mood-setter, July 30, 2005
This review is from: Music Composed And Performed By Goblin: Their Rare Tracks & Outtakes Collection, 1975-1989 (Audio CD)
If you're a horror fan of either George Romero or Dario Argento, you probably have this CD already or will soon buy it regardless of how highly I recommend it. I'll try and tailor this review to those of you who are curious about this Goblin CD and would like to know more before buying.

Despite their association with horror films, Goblin is not a heavy-metal band. This CD contains mostly keyboard-heavy instrumental rock that goes back and forth between jazz-rock and progressive rock. There are a lot of vintage keyboards to listen to here, from warm string effects courtesy of the Solina synth, to a variety of electric harpsichords and organs. Goblin wrote music with unusual syncopations and interesting dissonances, which often remind people of either the 'Tubular Bells' LP or John Carpenter's soundtracks. In other words, it hypnotizes you and then shocks you.

Two of the strongest tracks are "Suspira" and "L'Alba dei Morti Viventi." "Suspira" starts off playful and mischievous, almost like the music from a "Harry Potter" movie but then gets darker and scarier as the rhythms and instruments change and our attention is focused on a throbbing bass guitar. "L'Alba" is from the original "Dawn of the Dead" and features a heartbeat-like bass drum and intentionally plodding chord changes on the synth. It's the perfect score for a film dealing with the Living Dead (which is what 'Morti Viventi' is translated to in English).

No compiliation is going to be perfect, but if you're looking for suitably eerie mood music to listen to while reading horror novels you cannot go wrong with this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Goblin's greatest hits., October 26, 2001
By
This review is from: Music Composed And Performed By Goblin: Their Rare Tracks & Outtakes Collection, 1975-1989 (Audio CD)
This packed to the gills CD collection offers fans and new listeners alike the pleasure of having all of Goblin's most famous themes on one disc. Profondo Rosso, Suspiria, and Dawn of the Dead are all accounted for. Also offered are samples from the lesser known, but still quite good, Tenebre, Phenomona, and Contamination. To make the collection even better is a sampling of their substitute scores for Patrick and Martin (replacing Brian May and Donald B. Rubinstein respectively) as well as their work for television. As a Goblin sampler it is one of the best you can get your hands on. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the netherworld!, November 13, 2001

Some of the spookiest music you will ever hear! I really enjoy the rhythm combination of the bass and drums and the eerie keyboard solos that take you on a trip of the unknown. The Jazz element is present too which adds a unique overall touch the this music. If you are a Dario Argento or Italian horror movie fan you will definately enjoy this. Play them often on The Crazy Coyote Blues and Jazz Power Show 1490 KOTY in southcentral Washington state.

This disc introduces the American audience to the Italian band Goblin in perfect manner. Along with their most famous themes, DRG included several rare tracks never before available on LP or CD! A truly enjoyable collection all the way through. A great way to introduce yourself or a friend to Goblin's unique style or for a long-time fan to complete the collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Goblin Primer, May 14, 1998

This review is from: Music Composed And Performed By Goblin: Their Rare Tracks & Outtakes Collection, 1975-1989 (Audio CD)
This CD makes the perfect introduction to the music of Goblin, a wonderful group of musicians who have composed some of the best film music in history. Their haunting themes for films such as Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebre and Notturno make for great listening, even if one hasn't seen the films they are from.

4.0 out of 5 stars dance with the devils, October 17, 2005
This review is from: Music Composed And Performed By Goblin: Their Rare Tracks & Outtakes Collection, 1975-1989 (Audio CD)
awesome horror prog from the italian masters! all the "hits" are here, the themes from Profundo Russo, Suspiria, Tenebre. Goblin's songs are full of haunting atmosphere and creepy hooks, but also plenty of songs feature romantic ambience and even some funky disco influence creeps in on a few numbers. now that is scary.

This is an amazingly creepy sound but wonderfully composed! Goblin are masters at their art. This is the perfect halloween soundtrack. This is a great CD and if there's any hestitation in your mind, then you must be insane, listen to some soundclips and see if you like. My personal favorite composition is easily the Susperia Segments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Italian Horror Soundtracks, December 26, 2003

This review is from: Music Composed And Performed By Goblin: Their Rare Tracks & Outtakes Collection, 1975-1989 (Audio CD)
Goblin is one of those rare bands who are famous only for soundtracks. (Ala Tangerine Dream.) After seeing a number of Italian horror flicks, and appreciating some of the music Goblin scored on them, I had to give this CD a shot. Lo and behold I got it for Xmas and popped it in right away. What can I tell you? This CD is superb! I've had it playing non stop pretty much since I unwrapped it. For me, the tracks on the second half of the CD are my favorite but I love them all. Like the other reviewers said, some of the tracks are spooky jazzish while others rely heavy on uptempo beats and synthesizers. As a whole it's a balanced CD with a good mixture of eerie styles. You can't go wrong here if you like this sort of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome To The World Of Goblin, March 25, 2001
This review is from: Music Composed And Performed By Goblin: Their Rare Tracks & Outtakes Collection, 1975-1989 (Audio CD)
What do Dario Argento, George Romero, Enzo G. Castellari, Richard Franklin, Joe D'Amato, Ernest Pintoff, Luigi Cozzi, Giorgio Bontempi, and Michele Soavi have in common? I'm sure you've guessed by now but I'm gonna tell you anyway; besides being fine film directors, they used the coolest band on the face of this good green earth for their film soundtracks. 13 films (and one tv show) are represented on this CD and while there might be nitpicking on some of the material here and there it's hard to imagine a better introduction to this spectacular band. You NEED this CD!!!!!

Great music to drive around to late at night. It makes you feel like you're in a horror movie. Just don't walk around in the dark with headphones on or you !
