Music for your Elevator,

Buyer beware! From what I can ascertain, these might be Buddhist chants, but not what you might think given the front picture cover. Rather than being whisked off musically to a distant monastery or Pure Buddha Land, you are dropped kicked into elevator muzak central. The CD subtitle: "Music for Contemplation and Reflection" is true in the sense that you will be contemplating and reflecting why you bought this CD. I find it really hard to say anything nice about the cd because the packaging/product seems an an attempt to trick you. However, it can be said that the music is soothing and the recording clear. The tracks are delivered with an oriental feel but you can tell its a small studio production with electronic instrumental backup. This should be placed in a different musical category next to Enya or John Tesh. I'm sorry, I tried to say something nice.

Don't be fooled!,

Don't be fooled by the great packaging and insert--rather than being Buddhist chanting, this is cheezy new-age music. Don't waste your time or money unless you want something fluffier than Enya.

(...) I can quite see their point...the chants are traditional but set to modern music, however they are still slow enough to provide a quiet background repetitive tone, if you're busy doing something else. I have used the third track as an aide to meditation in my group of students and they're all quite taken with it; the chanting of the class in unison is a joy to listen to! Don't knock it 'til you've tried it; I listen to it whilst driving and find it enhances my concentration, even with the repetitive nature of the chants. Enjoy it for what it is; an amalgamation of traditional virtues mixed with the convenience of modernity. It's not too serious, and shouldn't be taken as such.

This is an amazing CD, it has the rare-to-find Medicine Buddha chants. It is so soothing and powerful! I listen to it often, and when I feel ill it helps me heal faster! I highly recommend it to all.

Although more than a tad bit commercial and over produced, sounding as though you've become trapped in a Chinese restaurant, it is not all that bad!
This is not something you want to have to deliberately concentrate on. It should be heard quietly in the background. Used in this manner, while putting the judgments to one siade, it is very relaxing. Everytime my daughter would become a bit fussy, this one would put this in the computer and instantly she would calm and begin to smile. |
