The music on this two CD compilation is excellent: well-performed, as authentic as modern scholarship allows, and wide-ranging in context.

The problem is that for anyone really interested in the material, even as a recreational listener, the liner notes are appallingly general. Perhaps even more irritating is the fact that there are no transcriptions or translations of the vocal pieces. Given the high quality of the rest of the package, this is a puzzling lapse.

I like to find music that is true and accurately played on period instruments..."step back in time" kind of things. I bought this because I wanted to teach my children the history of music starting as far back as possible. We all came to love the recordings. This is timeless stuff-it's been around for centuries-in contrast to Gaga-esque music which fades to black in a year or two. The CD offers a wonderful variety of pieces and I strongly recommend it for any music library.

..and, like me, you are curious about the music of the time, then this is an excellant collection. This is a two CD set and seems to be a fairly good sampling of the music from that era. It also makes good background music should you need to focus on something else.

The only downside was that Windows Media Player couldn't find any album information. It's usually not a big deal to add the music information yourself, but the titles on this CD were the originals, ie. long & in Latin, Italian, and whatever else..

All in all, it was a good value for the price.
