Book Description

August 14, 1996
Through the words of the therapist and the music of the patient Music at the Edge allows the reader to experience a complete music therapy journey. Frances, a trained musician who was facing death from AIDS, challenged Colin Lee, the music therapist, to help him clarify his feelings about living, and dying. In doing so he helped the therapist to clarify some of his feelings about this particularly demanding form of therapeutic work and to question the framework of the therapeutic relationship in palliative care.
Music at the Edge is a complete music therapy case study. The CD of extracts from improvisations made during sessions which accompanies the text is an integral part of a unique insight into the therapeutic process when working with death and dying.
This unusual and very moving book offers anyone who is working with, or facing, illness and death an opportunity to understand how the transcendent power of music can enable expression of painful feelings more accurately than words.

5.0 out of 5 stars RARE ARTISTRY and INSIGHT, December 8, 2011

This review is from: Music at the Edge: The Music Therapy Experiences of a Musician with AIDS (Paperback)
Exquisite artistry, rich humanity and superior clinical expertise come together in the name of Colin Lee. A pianist, composer and music therapy department chair at Wilfred Laurier University in Canada, Dr. Lee presents a most cogent plea for the role of beauty in the music therapist's delivery. Eleven meaty, courageous and phenomenological chapters faithfully preserve the patient's voice and the shared work of the therapeutic encounter. The book is accompanied by a marvelous CD recording that allows the reader to hear extracts from the improvisations occurring in session, and together, book and recording provide a work which I hope will become a classic in palliative care. One of the most important voices in the field, Dr. Lee might also be a bit of a voice crying in the wilderness, to the degree that he champions the role of beauty in both living and dying. I purchase books from Amazon literally all the time but only once before have taken the time to respond to these requests for reviews. It is a privilege to recommend this intelligent, sensitive and highly nuanced work to all discerning readers. It is a formative "must" for the advanced classroom, spiritual and artistic nourishment for those living with AIDS, and for the musician-clinicians or therapists working in private practice.
