This book offers students a complete overview of key writings on music education, from the ancient Greeks to contemporary American thought, with emphasis on writings from the last 100 years. Designed to complement the standard music pedagogy course, the selections range from Plato's Republic through William Billing's writings on Colonial American Music Education through today's advocacy for music education. In five sections, each part of the book is introduced by a brief essay giving an overview of the material covered and information placing it within the critical context of its day. I

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This collection of important writings in music education spans 2500 years, from thinkers like Aristotle to institutions like the National Endowment for the Arts. Noted music education historian Mark (emeritus, Towson State Univ.) has compiled excerpts from over 100 philosophers, scholars, administrators, and politicians. Although many of the early selections appeared in Source Readings in Music Education History (1982), a music education staple also edited by Mark, this volume is valuable for its wide variety of new American sources, particularly post-1950. Also unique to this volume is a section organizing the source materials by current educational issues: "Music Education and Society," "Music Education: Mind and Brain," "The School Music Program," and "Advocacy for Music Education." Invaluable to scholars and students and useful as a digest of key ideas in music education for the casual reader, this is highly recommended for public and academic libraries. Mark provides a great one-stop-shopping book for those seeking supplemental or reference materials to support understanding of music education practices and topics. However, reading the book in its entirety will give the reader the pleasure of a deeper understanding of the continuing process of the development of music education to its highest degree in our society and schools. This is a must have book!.

4.0 out of 5 stars Music Education: Source Readings from Ancient Greece to Today, December 14, 2007
This review is from: Music Education: Source Readings from Ancient Greece to Today (Paperback)
This is an excellent history of music. It could be more complete; however; I found it to be very useful in the music classes, in the Humanities classes, and the Education classes that I teach at the college level.
