Product Description

Volume Four of Bridge's outstanding Elliott Carter series features one of his masterpieces, Eight Pieces for Four Timpani, along with fascinating recent shorter works. Virtuoso guitarist David Starobin makes the most of "Shard," which packs more harmonic and rhythmic variety into its kaleidoscopic two and a half minutes than many much longer works. "Shard" reappears within the longer Luimen, a delicately colored piece that exploits its unusual instrumentation--trumpet and trombone joining the plucked instruments guitar, mandolin, harp, and vibraphone. Tempo e Tempi is a cycle of eight songs to poems by Italian poets for soprano and a quartet of winds and strings, fascinating in its rhythmic complexity and coloristic subtleties. Soprano Susan Narucki is the flawless high-flying soprano, coaxing lovely melodies from Carter's uncompromising writing. The timpani piece is bound to be a favorite of anyone with a taste for percussion instruments or with the curiosity to discover how much variety and nuance can be derived from the instrument. It's brilliantly performed here by Daniel Druckman. Bridge's first-class sonics and informative booklet notes add to the attraction of a must-have CD for Carterites and anyone interested in contemporary music. --Dan Davis

There is certainly no accounting for taste. Unlike the preceeding reviewer, the piece on this recording that really impressed me is "Eight Pieces For Four Tympani." All the other pieces are quite good as well, but the tympani piece is superb. Daniel Druckman is indeed a tympani vituoso. However, the typani piece is not simply virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity. There is genuine creativity and musical entertainment going on here, both in composition and interpretation. It's fun, fascinating and completely satisfying from beginning to end. Is the tympani piece worth the price of admission? I absolutely think so. Five stars for the tympani piece and 4 1/2 for the others.

Bridge Records has long supported the music of Elliott Carter, and this disc was their fourth completely dedicated to the composer. There's a healthy variety here, ranging from two solo pieces to a little ensemble work and a song cycle.

"Shard" for solo guitar (1997) is a three-minute piece which alternates furiously fast sections with moments more meditative, but never entirely complacent. It features all of Carter's characteristic tempo wizardy, but it has a zest in it that seems to link it to the flamenco tradition, regardless of whether the composer intended it. I find this piece not only engaging, but downright addictive, and it deserves a wide audience. David Starobin was the dedicatee, and he performs here.

"Shard" was soon integrated into "Luimen" for trumpet, trombone, vibraphone, mandolin, guitar & harp (1997), a unusual scoring that reminds one of the alto-tenor world of Boulez's "Le Marteau sans Maitre" or Takemitsu's "Ring"; indeed, it's amazing just how different Carter's music sounds here just because of the scoring, even if his actual technique remains the same. The performance by Speculum Musicae here is fine, but I prefer the recording by dedicatees the Nieuw Ensemble on a Naive disc.

"Tempo e Tempi" for soprano, oboe, clarinet, violin and cello (1999) is a setting of eight Italian poems by Montale, Ungaretti and Quasimodo. These are highly varied movements. Some feature only a couple of the instruments in the ensemble, others involve everyone but in the calm dialogues of late Carter, and still others are as furious as his 1960s work. Carter is always full of surprises here. There is striking melody here, e.g.
