Editorial Reviews

Maestro Nino Rota is best known for the seventeen film soundtracks he composed for the great Italian director Federico Fellini. These date from 'The White Sheik' in 1952 to 'The Orchestra Rehearsal' twenty-seven years later. Along the way the composer and director forged a singular creative partnership, capturing the absurdities and romances of Italian provincial life, of the circus and the street parade, of nightclubs and cafes, complimented by that indefinably nostalgic quality that is so characteristic of Rota's work. To Fellini, Nino Rota contributed scores for such masterpieces of European cinema but his greatest international success came in 1972 with the music he created for Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Godfather'. Rota s soundtrack for Coppola's epic would prove to be one of the most enduringly popular in film history, but there was also controversy; Rota's score being removed at the last minute from the list of 1973 Academy Award nominees when it was discovered that he had used the theme in Eduardo De Filippo's 1958 comedy 'Fortunella', and therefore the music for The Godfather was deemed ineligible for an Oscar. Nino Rota s original music for 'Fortunella'- that would re-emerge as the famous love theme in the Godfather - is included in this set along with themes from all of the Fellini feature films of the fifties that established him as a major new directorial voice.

It's great to finally have access to selected original recordings of Fellini movie soundtracks from the '50s composed by Nino Rota. These songs all feature classic and quirky melodies, arrangements and performances. The music is so incandescent that it can withstand even the most unflattering of presentations. Which is what you get with the variable sound quality of the tracks on this CD.

All the cuts are in mono, the industry standard of the era. Many mono recordings from the 50s sound absolutely great - when the original master recordings are used. That isn't case here because there is a distinct lack of full range sound on many of these tracks that renders them tinny and shrill with occasional distortion. Probably the worst examples are the soundtrack excerpts from "La Strada." It sounds like someone recorded them from the worn speaker blaring out of an ancient television set.

Suspiciously, the CD booklet does not include basic information such as when the recordings were made and who played on them. It seems likely that some of these tracks came from secondhand sound sources that originally appeared on bootlegs.

But since it is unclear if the master recordings for these tunes still exist, this CD will have to do until better fidelity recordings surface. I, for one, look forward to that day. The masters must be out there somewhere.

Fortunately, Rota's 1960s Fellini soundtracks are available as complete soundtrack albums with full spectrum sound and presence. This the era to start at when building a Fellini soundtrack collection. Enjoy.

A sonic LOSS. Audio seems to be derived from ancient analogue
film sound track recording, not tape. It's rather awful.
