5.0 out of 5 stars Connecting a billion dots November 5, 2013

Gary Dassing has been the driving force behind Texas-based Mentallo & the Fixer since the early 90s. In its initial stages, the project was strictly a goth/industrial hybrid, producing such influential works as Revelations 23 and Where Angels Fear to Tread. Following those releases, however, Dassing's philosophy shifted from focused design to something that defined the term `experimental.' Releases such as Love Is The Law and Vengeance Is Mine carried traces of the project's early sound, but it was abundantly clear that Dassing was no longer interested in recreating what he (and others) had already done, but producing something new and uniquely his.

A major shift came with 2007's Enlightenment Through A Chemical Catalyst, a bristling and explosive creation that showed Dassing had not lost his path, but refined it. Going back through Mentallo's discography, it becomes abundantly clear that Dassing was feeling his way, trying different approaches, in his search for channeling his experiences through his machines.

Music From The Eather another landmark along this path. It is not an industrial album, nor is it ambient or IDM; to try to fit it into an existing category is an exercise in frustration. The limited edition, which is a three-disc, three-plus-hour experience, is a daunting and challenging release, but in the best possible way (there's also a two-disc version, but that's like studying two points of a triangle). Eather is not an album you can play in the background, nor is it one you can relax to. It is an album to dissect, to immerse oneself in, to give oneself over to the journey Dassing has laid out. Dassing has said he's not really a musician, but that doesn't mean he's not an artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as musical as their other work March 11, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It lacks the great depth or changes in musical tonality and rhythm as Mentallo's other albums. That's not to say the timbre doesn't change. I can't stress that enough. It is certainly interesting to listen to.

I give it 5 Stars because Mentallo uses the same sounds used in The Ultimate DOOM, pistol and water, in track 07. I love the ultimate DOOM. Therefore I think this record is awesome.
