This is not a very good Tailleferre CD,
By Paul Wehage (Paris, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Music of Germaine Tailleferre Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
This CD completely misses the point. The tempi are too slow. The performances are not up to the level required to do justice to this music. What is especially missing is the sense of humour and wit which is necessary for this repertoire. This isn't the music of some University professor who's fishing for tenure....This is the music of a real musician who wrote for real performing musicians. The lackluster performances by this conductor and this ensemble are not what the composer had in mind.... The Concertino for Flute and Piano is NOT the orchestration done by Germaine Tailleferre, but a reconstructed version which doesn't sound at all like what you hear on the original Radio France performance. Don't buy this recording. It doesn't have the sparkle or the polish that this music requires. It's a waste of your time and money.

Wonderful recordings of unknown gems,
By CD Maniac (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Music of Germaine Tailleferre Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
This a wonderful recording to have of neglected music of a neglected composer, Germaine Tailleferre who is slowly being "rediscovered". The highlight of this disc is the Concerto for piano, which mixes neo-baroque compositional techniques with French orchestration. It is very appealing and inventive and worth the price of the disc by itself. The Concerto for Flute, Piano and orchestra suffers by comparison--one wonders whether the performace is at fault for a slight lack of energy, or whether this is due to the orchestration which is not Tailleferre's original (it was lost). The orchestration is a reconstruction, and it does seem to be a little on the low-wattage side. However the Partita for winds and strings is another excellent work, brilliantly scored, and again very appealing. It's a shame this music is not heard more often, and the performers are to be applauded for putting these on disc. Highly recommended.

This disc is volume II to the 1996 release of Tailleferre's music by Helicon. Although perhaps not as attractive as the first volume, there is no reason to dismiss the disc as a failure. Slower tempi or not, overall, these are good performances, and if you are collecting Tailleferre's recordings as I am, you will want to have this recording.
