Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It is traditional when dining out or attending fairs in Germany to hear folk music like this--ideally played by live bands, but if nothing else then on CD. This compilation of well-known folk melodies uses traditional Bavarian instrumentation--violin, clarinet, trumpet, zither, harp, and double bass--no guitars or synthesizers here. You'll hear everything from 19th-century-style marches like "In Guter Laune" with its four-beat drive and stirring brass to enchanting Roma-inspired ballads like "Grüne Augen" with its wonderful and somber violin-piano conversation. An ideal CD for any dinner party with a Continental theme to say nothing of a reminder of your last vacation to Europe. --Erik Macki

This review is from: Music of Germany (Audio CD)
What a wonderful anti-rap cd!!! I work in a very "ethnic" neighborhood and have to put up with South- & Central American music all the time, not to mention unintelligible, incoherent rap "music." (I'll accept it when Kiri Te Tanawa sings rap's greatest selections at Carnegie.) Lovely, lovely, cheerful music. A real balm to my Teutonic soul. The selection ranges from spritely dances to more gentle or thoughtful pieces reminiscent of that last bit of golden sun just before the clouds of war fell upon Germany. If you enjoy weekend NPR music, you will truly enjoy this piece. You can put it on as background without being overrun by lyrics or bass. Very enjoyable!
