This review is from: Music is Healing (Paperback)
The focus of this book is how music can work on the immune and endocrine systems to effect healing. The findings are based in part on the author's own studies and experiments, particularly with her own health. Dr. Frances le Roux, a practicing physiotherapist in So. Africa, suffered from hyperthyroidism and thyroid eye disease and she attributes her ability to find relief from her symptoms in listening to music. Some areas of discussion include: the historical background of music in healing, music and emotions, music and the immune system, relieving pain with music, the use of music in hospital settings and the spiritual dimension in healing.

What mainly interested me about this book was that it uses Classical and Baroque music as the music of the study, because this is where my musical interest lies. Dr. le Roux discusses her main inspiration for the study as being the music of J.S. Bach; however, she stresses that everyone needs to find their own music. In order for music to have a positive effect, it needs to be pleasant with the intent to uplift and it needs to be meaningful and based on one's own musical choice.

Addendum: If this book or the subject matter is of interest to you, you might also want to look at the doctor's website. She has written articles for a number of natural health journals and abstracts of those articles appear on her website. The October, 2011 article discusses classical music and stress management.
