5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Deftones - Live in Hawaii was completely beyond my expectations.

The acoustic versions of Knife Party, The Boy's republic, Digital Bath and Change (in the house of flies) are amazing.

I thought that it was great when they showed the guys hanging out enjoying Hawaii, but I wasn't too thrilled with their live preformance on stage. I know Chino was having some trouble with his throat at the time so when we tried to scream on stage it wasn't very pretty. Music in High Places shows a more down to earth side of the guys that you probably wouldn't be able to see else where.

I suggest purchasing this if you are a fan of Deftones or just a music fan in general.

I know Chino was having some trouble with his throat at the time so when we tried to scream on stage it wasn't very pretty. When they were preforming the accoustic version of their songs I thought it was great. It was just that one thing that threw them off. They can play much better than that, but you can't expect them to play perfect all the time. I don't know everything that is on the dvd because I saw it on mtv sometime last year, so they might have some neat things on the dvd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the acoustic songs, September 4, 2007

This review is from: Music in High Places - Deftones (Live in Hawaii) (DVD)
Im a huge Deftones fan and as soon as I saw the video for knife prty (acoustic) on youtube i had to get it. Overall I really liked the dvd, but I didnt like the fact that some songs would transition from the regular rock version to acoustic, it kinda ruined it. It is worth a look though, the songs sound great in acoustic. This is a great band.

First of all I should say I'm am a huge Deftones fan. I think of them as one of the more talented groups who aren't afraid of trying new things and exploring thier own versatility. I also love Hearing songs stripped down for an acoustic performance.

I have to agree with others that his voice is off during the stage performances. My friend and I had a huge laugh during Change(in the house of flies). It almost seems like his jaw is going to be dislocated.

There are definitely some great parts on this dvd and If you're a fan and you're considering this puchase after reading the reviews then for god's sake man, buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars i recommend this dvd to any fans of the deftones, September 14, 2003
This review is from: Music in High Places - Deftones (Live in Hawaii) (DVD)
like i said in the title i recommend it to any fan of the deftones but be cautious, dont expect to see chino and co. rocking the crowd. The scenery is nice and the acoustic performances are totally amazing (knife party, this boys republic) they also incorparate the idea of having some of the songs split into part acoustic and part rock performance (digital bath, change)the only thing that stops this dvd getting full marks is chinos voice as u can tell he shuldnt be singing in his condition but other then that its full marks

4.0 out of 5 stars They said themselves, "You picked the wrong band to do this", March 3, 2003

If you read the review title, you may wonder how it coincides with the rating I gave it. Oh well, on Saturday night, my mom got it for me. I'd say I'm a big Deftones fan, so I thought it would be cool. This DVD was completely different than my expectations. The whole "Music In High Places" thing seems like taking a "hard" band and putting it in a soft setting. Thus creating acoustic renditions and more mellow versions of the original. The one BIG problem I saw with this is that the intensity was not there at all. Something that would seem as a given in a metal concert. But, yet again, read the review title. During the live portion of the show, it seemed that Chino was losing his voice most of the times (Which upsets me, cause I'm seeing them this summer). He just couldn't hold it. But, the whole DVD was beautifully instrumentally. They really know how to play their instruments. I also was upset with the sound quality and camera angles. It seemed so amateur, but it does flow like they apparently wanted to have it as. If you want to get this DVD, think about how you'd want to perceive the Deftones....

5.0 out of 5 stars Do not be fooled..., November 6, 2002

This dvd is really good, The boys dont come off as bevis and butthead thats just how they are very down to earth and feel comfortable with their music. And the deftones are the furthest thing from the tag the media has adopted "NU-METAL" they are in their own zone with metal influences but by no means should be labeled with bands they have seperated themselves from ie: Korn, slipknot, limp triscut etc.. My advice is by this dvd if your a music fan cause thats all it is and all it will ever be

4.0 out of 5 stars Give Them a Break, March 18, 2005
This review is from: Music in High Places - Deftones (Live in Hawaii) (DVD)
Ok, some people have been complaining about Chino having a bad voice live, well what do you expect, he was breathing in SULFUR DIOXIDE all day. And even with that he didn't do too bad at all (Other than Digital Bath and Change, those weren't too good, but those are awfully hard songs to sing in the first place). Besides, it isn't like he pulled an Ashlee Simpson and lip synced, or cancelled the show, he still sang live because he has the guts to. The instrumentals were fantastic, but the recording could be somewhat better. He has some amazing screams such as at the end of Headup and Be Quiet and Drive.

3.0 out of 5 stars deftones (live in hawaii), June 22, 2011
This review is from: Music in High Places - Deftones (Live in Hawaii) (DVD)
i feel mixed about this dvd. i feel the acoustic and electric performances should have been separated completely. also i wish there had just been more to the dvd as a whole. this is the first time you really get to see this side to deftones. the songs have this soft side where they seem easy breakable but still come off strong. knife prty and boy's republic sound great even though chino's voice isn't doing so good around this time. i feel the official amazon.com review by david stubbs paints the band as being these uncaring thugs who just came to hawaii to wreck everything. that is completely wrong and i think that is a misleading view of the dvd. "The very presence of these plump, goateed, combat-trousered nu metallurgists feels like a sort of desecration of the spirituality of Hawaii." stubbs says. i don't think this is true at all, besides a little playing around you see the band being about the music. i think he missed the point altogether and was too focused on the way they talked and dressed. i think even none nu-metal fans can enjoy this music. the acoustic sets have a calm feel and in no way resemble metal at all. even if your not a deftones fan i think this can be enjoyable for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great in lieu of an "official" Deftones DVD, January 13, 2004
By
This review is from: Music in High Places - Deftones (Live in Hawaii) (DVD)
Thanks to some punks a few years back; a deftones van was broken into and tons of video footage (among other things) was pilfered. That event effectively ruined hopes for an official DVD from the defontes.

This has been a good replacement. Interviews, acoustic performances, live performances all with the backdrop for Hawaii makes this DVD pretty good. Plus there are interviews with the band members and some really entertaining scenes of them taking a tour of places in Hawaii.

I think Chino may break his throat in this one, but nonetheless, I love the deftones and it was pretty entertaining. Now if they could just release an official DVD...
