Goos in Alaska: Breathtaking Scenery & Music,
By CHRISTINE (CALUMET CITY, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Alaska (Music in High Places Series) (DVD)
This DVD is spectacular, with its views of Alaska's ice glaciers, snow covered mountains and clear blue skies. John, Robby and Mike were so personable with the people of Alaska. Their honesty and down-to-earth personalities made it very enjoyable to watch. The best part, of course, was listening to John sing the Goo Goo Dolls most popular songs, like Black Balloon, Slide and the MOST awesome version of "Here is Gone". If you have DTS on your sound system, it will give you goosebumps. You don't have to be just a Goo fan to enjoy this DVD - it is awesome and worth getting!

I don't have much to add to other reviewers' comments, but I wanted to make my 5 stars count! :-)
I had been only a casual Goo Goo Dolls fan until I caught this video on UHD (DirecTV) in high-def. WOW! I was taken aback by the scenery, then the music and, to top it off - the guys themselves...they are so charming and funny, and soooo down to earth. My husband and I were so captivated, and now we own all of the GGD's CDs!

The Alaskan Goo Goo's,

I lived in Alaska for almost nine years. To see the Goo Goo Dolls perfoming in the state of Alaska was incredible. Their music, with the backdrop of Alaska makes for one of the most awesome music DVD's available. If you are a GGD fan this is a must own DVD. The version of the song "Slide" is a must see. The Goo Goo Dolls are out on a chunk of glacier floating while singing the song. Simply Great!!!!!!

I've been a Goo Goo Dolls fan for a while now, so when I heard on the radio that they had a DVD, I quickly bought a copy. Out of any place in the world, Alaska seemed to be the perfect place for The Goo Goo Dolls to play. From mud-sliding, to the tear-jerking rendition of "Acoustic #3" on a block of lonely ice, this movie gives you a very good idea of the depth the band members have. They are so humble and honest, and that's a great trait to have in an industry such as this.I'm glad that they added "You Never Know" to the extras on the DVD. I love this song and love seeing Robby Takac perform with his undeniable energy, despite what people think of his raspy voice, and rock style. You can definately still feel their punk-rock days shine through his songs. I'm also happy to see "Sympathy" as well. I think the mandolin, and the subtle guitar strumming, brings the relatable lyrics to life. I don't think "Sympathy" could have been written any other way. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who is a fan of this band, or anyone who liked them during the Dizzy Up The Girl era.

This is by far the best DVD ever made. The Goo's did such an excellent job playing their songs. They are superior musicians and have tons of talent. You can tell that they had so much fun being there and they were so themselves. The scenery of Alaska was absolutely breathtaking and unbelievable. So unreal. I highly recommend this to any Goo Goo Dolls fan out there. You will not be disappointed. John, Robby, and Mike, you guys are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AWESOME DVD,

This review is from: Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Alaska (Music in High Places Series) (DVD)
I saw this first on TV and then direct TV so I could not wait to own my own crystal clear copy. This DVD is amazing and exciting for Goo fans. It is about the only "real" DVD we can purchase of them. It not only shows their amazing music but how much fun they are. I mean mudsliding with the local kids? Not all stars would do this and it was quite the site. Very funny!! The scenery of Alaska is beautiful and seeing this also made me think about it as a vacation spot. Johnny, Robby, and Mike, are in rare form in this video and their beautiful music is captured perfectly with the beautiful back drop of scenic Alaska. A MUST HAVE DVD!! LOVE IT!!

I'm not sure what the other reviewer is talking about regarding video quality. This title *IS* Anamorphic, which means more video information is contained than non-anamorphic, so when the title is stretched back out to 16:9, you don't lose anything. IOW, there's no reason he should need to use the "zoom" feature on his set.
I own 4 or 5 of the MIHP series, and the quality of this one IS the best. There are a few older titles that aren't anamorphic. Love the "Play just the music" feature too. I was never a huge goo-goo dolls fan until I saw this. I like their acoustic tunes better than full band rock and roll.

One reviewer mistakingly said this DVD was 4:3, but it is actually anamorphic 16:9 aspect ratio. That being said, I was only a passive Goo Goo Dolls fan until I watched this DVD. I bought it mainly because I've hiked in Alaska several times and my ex-wife is a Goo fan. I was knocked out by the musicianship of the band. I expected a typical Unplugged show, but this is more like friends sitting down and playing together for fun, and having a great time with it. I have since purchased all the GGD CDs and learned to play most of the songs on the DVD.
The picture quality is excellent, with only a few minor flaws such as dirt on the camera lens left in the show. The DTS track works very well with my system, sounding like the band is playing in my living room. I consider this a reference DVD that I show to my family/friends to show off my system. I also find my self watching this a lot more than I do movies or other music videos. The extra features are interesting, especially the music only track.

Mud Sliding?,

This review is from: Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Alaska (Music in High Places Series) (DVD)
Not a bad video. The music was pretty good, Goo Goo Dolls sound pretty much the same "live" as they do on their albums...except John R. is a bit flat at certion places. Be sure to watch the "Just Music" portion, the scenery is some of the more awe inspiring for the whole show.
I enjoyed the views of Alaska, and the moutains from the train bit, were beautiful! The "interviews" with the guys were lacking something, John R. is not exactly articulate. But wait till the end, when the "behind the scenes" crew video is shown. That is funny! And one last note; It was nice how the guys were playing with the local kids. They go "mud sliding", and then interview some of the kids. And it is too cute how the little kids are glowing about; "...I can't believe I went mud sliding with the Goo Goo Dolls!!!!!!!!!" -Mud sliding for those of you out there who haven't seen the video, is exactly what it sounds like. Anyway, an all around fun watch. If you like "Music in High Places" this would be one to add to the collection!

I first listened to Goo Goo Dolls when watching "City of Angels" with my ex, I gotta thank her for that...It made possible getting deep into one of the bands I most respect for the simple, eager and talented music I've got the pleasure to listen to. I knew these guys for the Billboard Blockbuster songs "Iris", "Slide",etc but knew that I was scoring big purchasing this DVD for these guys can seriously play and yet seriously-and ironically- be a bunch of funny regular guys who mud slide with the local boys and play "here is gone" on a train (darn i couldn't get a couple of tickets for that one!!!). I can't get enough of Alaska and the Goos playing: imagine Acoustic #3 played in the middle of the bluest stream ever over a pile of ice with a never ending blue sky above...can't right? well it happens here! Playing in bars where u can't smoke yet a musician playing the harmonica is going to die coughing at the end of the song...lol. The local radio stud who weighs at least 350 pounds. Everything, everything is for discovering more about the Goos insights while listening to their heart touching music. Grab it folks while you can. Peace
