5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD
This is a great cd and has a great vibe. The music is very tight and all the songs are performed very well. Those who like change will enjoy it very much cause there is a new feel to the songs and believe me its even greater than the originals. (as hard as that might be) Rest of My Life is the highlight because it was a great track on Elva and its even better on here

3.0 out of 5 stars Takes some getting used to
When I bought this CD, I did not realize that it was entirely acoustic. However, it has grown on me a lot. "Rest of My Life" is awesome, but a lot of people have heard that by now. "Seeing Red" acoustic is a different experience and I find that "Rescue Me" is actually better than the original recording. However, "Up All Night"...

5.0 out of 5 stars Well..., August 15, 2006
This review is from: From Music in High Places (Audio CD)
I guess any punk band that goes acoustic nowadays has my respect. I love punk-when it's genuine. The beef I have with today's punk (it's okay, really) is that it's downweighted by all mainstream sounds and expectations from major lables that it can be. The result? Millions of cookie cutter pop-punk lovesick junkie bands. It's good, but after the 5th time around, it gets a bit stolid.

That being said, Unwritten Law does not fit into this catagorie. For one thing they're lyrics are much deeper and, well, more phylisophical to say the least. Not all they're songs are all "my girlfriend dumped me for someone else" or "I just met some hottie and I can already tell she's my soulmate," basically sh** that just doesn't fly in real life. Just read the lyrics to "Seeing Red." But on another level, the guitar is so much more sophisticated. It's not just four power chords making the song sound like a 60's bubble-gum pop band sped up. Unwritten Law are far more advanced musically than that.

Well, now that we have a happy little review of the band as a whole, lets go to the cd, shall we. This 11-track disc features unplugged versions of past works, most of which can be found on the previous studio release, "Elva" (which as a sidenote, I would also HIGHLY recommend.) But it is more than that. Just listen to, say, "Up All Night," the hit song off "Elva," then listen to how it's revamped on "TMIHP" and you'll notice that's it's given a completely different face. The origional version on "Elva," is loud, enjoyable, and overall just a classic punk song even if it never overplayed on the airwaves. The version on here is not necissarily better, but it proves that studio effects were not the driving power of the song. The song just rocks, period.

Unwritten Law do not just confine themselves to Punk. "Rest Of My Life," also off "Elva," is your achtypical alternative pop mainstream music, lovey dovey, you name it, but somehow, Unwritten Law just make it their own. "Elva (the song)" has a life of it's own. It's not your typical pop love song. It's what the radio needs to be playing today. Also imbedded in this is the fact that they don't restrict themself to one punk sound. See, there are a bit different types of punk, from the nemesis of the Clash and the Sex Pistols, To the old school sound of Social Distortion, to the new wave of Green Day, to the poppy mediocrity of today. Unwritten Law covers it all, from the heavy rockin' "Blame it on me" to "rest of my life." This album prooves to me that they can pick up accoustic instruments and not ruin a song like some non-talented artists do. Nuff Said? Great! Music fans that aren't living in a carboard box of media expectations, buy this album. Pick up elva to, eh:)

Oh, and contrary to what amazon has posted, only one track, "blame it on me," is recorded live. the rest are just studion acoustic mixes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music lives on..., January 26, 2003
This review is from: From Music in High Places (Audio CD)
Unwritten Law is a great band with exceptional talent, whether MTV uses it for a quick buck or not. This album is refreshing change from the loud adrenaline and sweat factory concerts they put on. Its music for music's sake. From the concept to performance this is a sound album and sound investment. UL fans should not write this one off as selling out, but rather exploring the vast universe of music. Its aggrevating to hear people complain about how a band has sold out and ... when all they are doing is experimenting with great material in a new medium. Expand your appreciation with one of the best bands ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Absolutely amazing..., January 24, 2003
This review is from: From Music in High Places (Audio CD)
Every song on this CD (except for Shallow) were recorded acoustically in Yellowstone Park for the MTV show; Music in high Places. Which, by the way is the best show they've had on since Unplugged. I only saw the show once and they never showed it again, but they sounded so great that I had to buy this CD.

All of the songs, except for three, are from their latest studio album "ELVA". Songs like "Geronimo", Up all night", and Blame it on me"(just to name a few) all sound incredible. And lets not forget their biggest hit "Seein' red" which sounds every bit as good in acoustic as it sounds in "ELVA",if not better. The other three songs, "Cailin, "Before I go", and "Shallow" are also amazing. Scott Russo's voice, PK's bass playing, steve Morris and Rob Brewer's guitar playing and Wade's drum beating all sound perfect without any mess-ups. Unfortunately the CD is only about 37 mins long but on the good side this isn't an expensive CD.

Unwitten Law should not have the label of a "pop-punk" band, and anyone who listens to this CD will agree that they are much more than that. Besides you will never see blink-182,sum 41, new found glory or any other modern pop-punk band release an all acoustic album.

Every Unwritten Law fan should buy this CD and anybody who likes any style of rock should listen to this album because you won't be disappointed. Once you press play on this CD you will not fast forward or skip any of the tracks, TRUST ME.

5.0 out of 5 stars such a treasure, October 15, 2003
This review is from: From Music in High Places (Audio CD)
I stumbled upon this particular album by accident, and I am so thankful I did. Immediately, you are struck by the sheer talent of this band from the first notes. Fresh, exciting, and completely fierce,Unwritten Law delivers acoustic renditions of their punk/rock songs. It's a wonder why they are not one of the biggest bands around. Their lyrics are honest and forceful, their music is intricate and extremely well-played.

Different styles integrate into an acoustic medley that make for an amazing listening experience. Personal favorites include the beautifully honest 'Rest of my Life' and the blues rock infused 'Blame it On Me'

Unwritten Law are unlike any other band out there. 'Music from High Places' is an album that fully embodies all elements of good music: raw talent, fresh sounds, seasoned skill.

It's what all albums should strive to be.

Enjoy!

"Seeing Red" acoustic is a different experience and I find that "Rescue Me" is actually better than the original recording. However, "Up All Night" is absolutely painful to listen to. By far, the best song on the album is "Shallow." Buy the CD, if for no other reason than it was recorded almost entirely in Yellowstone and northwestern Wyoming.
