Melodic gong ensembles and male singing with percussion are found throughout Sumatra. Two of each are heard here: West Sumatran talempong (in two contrasting forms): kulintang from Lampung, at the southern end of the island; the choral didong songs of the Gayo in Aceh; and Salawat dulang, competitive duet singing from west Sumatra that surprisingly uses popular songs as a vehicle for commenting on points of Islamic doctrine. 73 minutes. Could Be Techno Easily...,

Most of these tracks involves gongs and quick percussion sequences/patterns that make it sound like minimal-techno such as is produced by Kompakt or Basic Channel. The similarity is pretty startling, especially if you listen to track 11, which even has some of the echo-y sounds that characterize drum and bass rythyms in western dance music.
The exception to this sound are the three tracks from the Gayo people of Aceh- those sound like native-american style chanting music, and were less interesting.

Most of the selections are quick pieces played on row gongs, but the last vocal duet is a gas!
