Most of these tracks involves gongs and quick percussion sequences/patterns that make it sound like minimal-techno such as is produced by Kompakt or Basic Channel. The similarity is pretty startling, especially if you listen to track 11, which even has some of the echo-y sounds that characterize drum and bass rythyms in western dance music.

The exception to this sound are the three tracks from the Gayo people of Aceh- those sound like native-american style chanting music, and were less interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars gongs and an exciting vocal piece, September 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Music Of Indonesia 12: Gongs And Vocal Music From Sumatra (Audio CD)
Most of the selections are quick pieces played on row gongs, but the last vocal duet is a gas!
