Music Inspired by the Movie Scarface,
This review is from: Music Inspired By the Movie Scarface (Audio CD)
Scarface is without a doubt one of my all time favourite gangster movies so I was looking forward to Def Jams release of "Music Inspired by the Movie Scarface". Most of the cuts on this release are old, several of them make reference/are related to the movie Scarface which show how this one movie had a fair amount of influence on many different rappers from different places whether it be East, West or South. My favourite tracks on this one:It's Mine- Nas & Mobb Deep collabo, this cut appeared on Mobb Deep's 1999 album "Murda Musik", great collabration track. Ten Crack Commandments.- The late great Notorious B.I.G., I remember when he first laid down this track enjoyed it then, still enjoyed it today theres alot of truth and knowledge in this one. Mr. Scarface- By Scarface, Southern rap legend delivers on a track directly inspired by movie. Streets is Watching- One of Jay-Z older cuts another standout. Dope Man- One of my fav tracks by N.W.A., brings thing back. Money, Power, Respect - This is one of the best songs from he Lox's first album. A Bird In The Hand - Ice Cube- Sick Ice Cube track. Bad Boyz - Shyne feat. Barrington Levy- Lead single from Shynes debut album an excellent track. I am happy that they put this one on. Hopefully shyne will be out soon. G.O.D. Pt.III- Mobb Deep- The albums closer is a great track by Prodigy and Havoc, even if it may be based on Pacinos other great movie Godfather series. There are several more good tracks that I enjoyed on this. The only ones I did not really like were the two new tracks "Yeo" by Camron, and "Pusha Man" by Joe Budden, both artists having far nicer tracks than these ones, even if less related. I also felt that this album should have at least had some latin hip hop on it, but unfortantely there was none. No Big Pun, No Tony Touch, No Norega, No Cuban Link, No Fat Joe, many of these artists have made references to this movie over the years on some very memorable tracks. Dont get me wrong, this is a highly enjoyable release, I just think it could of been better if Def Jam had taken some music other then there own for this recording by doing that they would have introduced some older tracks that alot of people have yet to hear (I have alot of the tracks on this release on different cds that I have bought over the years). With that said this is a good release that I would recommend for the collection if you like the movie and enjoy Hip Hop.

Students of popular culture know very well that Brian De Palma's "Scarface" remains an iconic work in the rap, thug culture. The look, style and dialogue of the movie and Al Pacino's immortal performance as Cuban gangster Tony Montana have influenced everything from how rappers dress to how they speak (weather this is a good thing is up for debate). So it comes as no surprise that with the re-release of the classic 80's movie on DVD comes this semi-tribute album from Def Jam records. But it is a disappointing recycling of old tracks. You would think that these guys who idolize the movie so much would take the time to write some new material. One of the pluses would be the inclusion of dialogue from the movie, this is inventive, but feels cheated because it's surrounded by songs you can get on other albums, in fact, a lot of the songs seem to have no connection at all to the movie. How are we supposed to literally take some of these songs such as "Ten Crack Commandments" as material inspired directly by "Scarface?" "It's Mine" by Mobb Deep only makes sense since it samples the film's opening title music. Some could argue this music is uneeded, since "Scarface" as a movie doesn't even deal with rap culture themes. But still, the movie's influence cannot be denied, and it indeed would be fitting to see a good tribute album from the culture which glorifies it, but this is not it. Fans should go purchase the newly re-released and re-mastered original soundtrack which features Giorgio Moroder's score. This album has good intentions, but they rarely show.
