70s Grooves for the year 2000,
By J. Highsmith (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Music From And Inspired By Shaft (Audio CD)
Just when you thought soundtracks couldn't get any better, (The Best Man, Romeo Must Die, Love And Basketball, and Big Momma's House has already impressed us in late 99 and early 2000.) The "Shaft (2000)" soundtrack has been brought to us. With the exception of "Theme From Shaft" by Isaac Hayes, all of these songs were made this year, but most of them still have that 70s appeal to it. This example is clear in what I think are the best two songs on the soundtrack: R Kelly's "Up And Outta Here" and Donell Jones' "Do What I Gotta Do". R Kelly does it again with this song, ladies and gentlemen. You'll be reminded of his last double CD, after hearing this song. Other highlights on this soundtrack are: R Kelly's "Bad Man", Outkast and UGK's "Tough Guy", T.I.P. and Beanie Sigel's "2 Glock 9's" and Parle w/Jadakiss and Eve with "Fix Me". Anyone that likes new music with a 70s appeal to it, will love the "Shaft (2000)" soundtrack.

If you like hip hop, this album is for you!,

Personally, I'm not a major fan of today's R&B industry. In fact, I expected the majority of the soundtrack to resemble more of the 70's soul and jazz genre, wherewith this film originated. However, if you are a hip hop fan, you won't be disappointed with this purchase. Of course, the theme by Isaac Hayes really gets the album going and I must admit I really enjoyed R. Kelly additions. Overall, fans of the older Shaft that follow today's rap will more than likely enjoy this new rendition of a favorite film figure.

Not As Bad As The Movie Was (3.5 Stars),

The opening track to this soundtrack is the wonderful "Theme From Shaft" by the legendary Isaac Hayes. All similarities with the original soundtrack end there. I mean that in a good way though. This soundtrack has a feel of its own. It starts off strong, but it doesn't finish very well. The first track is followed up by two songs from R. Kelly with "Bad Man" being the better of the two. Even though I'm not the biggest Alicia Keys fan, I have to admit that she does an wonderful job on the sexy "Rock Wit U". Big Gipp comes through and drops the tight "We Servin'". There's more DF music to be found from the Outkast collaboration with UGK on the incredibly funky "Tough Guy" (which Andre totally rips) and the amazing "Automatic" from the underrated Sleepy Brown which also features Backbone and Big Rube. Carl Thomas contributes "Summer Rain" which can also be found on his own album. And "Ain't Gonna See Tomorrow" is a pretty good contribution from Mystikal.
There are a few mistakes to be found on this album though. Tracks like "Fix Me", "Pimp Sh*t", "How You Want It?", and "Cheatin" could have been left off of this album and I don't think anyone would have even noticed. There weren't necessarily bad songs, but they were definitely skippable. Donell Jones' contribution (Do What I Gotta Do) was somewhat predictable and boring. The same could be said about Angie Stone's song too. And the duet of T.I. (known as T.I.P. on this album) and Beanie Sigel (Two Glock 9's) mixes about as well as oil and water. And "Serenata Negra" from Fulanito seems VERY out of place on this soundtrack. I'd have to say that the negatives all end there. Overall, I'd have to say that this soundtrack is pretty solid. It's not as fluid as its predecessor, but it's funky and fun in its own right. This was a great soundtrack in an era of cookie cutter soundtracks that accompany most "black" movies. I'd reccomend getting this album if you don't have these albums already. The good songs on this album definitely make it worth the money. Standout Tracks: Bad Man - R. Kelly, We Servin' - Big Gipp, Automatic - Sleepy Brown feat. Backbone & Big Rube, Rock Wit U - Alicia Keys, Tough Guy - Outkast feat. UGK, and Summer Rain - Carl Thomas

I honestly don't think much of the soundtrack but it does showcase the immensely talented and smooth Donell Jones. This is one of the most slept on artists in the industry. Do what I gotta do is one of the best tracks that I've heard in a long, long time. Pick up the Where I wanna Be cd because is R and B with a bit of an edge.

The Coolest Soundtrack,

so far this year. I am really feeling the R. Kelly, the Donell Jones, and the Carl Thomas. And they absolutely HAD to put Isaac Hayes in there. This soundtrack is great.

WHAT'S THE SCORE!,

It's all good that people can purchase the music inspired by the movie SHAFT, but, I'm feeling a bit shafted at the moment. I don't really have an interest in the music inspired from the movie - I'm salivating for the David Arnold SCORE, not the soundtrack, but the SCORE. Hello Paramount? Where's the beef? Until then.....

SOUNDTRACK HEAT CONTINUES,

2000 so far been a very good year for movie soundtracks thus far you have :Romeo Must Die, Love and Basketball,Big Momma's House, the vastly overlooked Black & White all are great soundtracks now you can add the soundtrack to Shaft to the growing list: Shaft is one of the most complete , enjoyable soundtracks every song on here is simply incredible.. Most of the tracks here has a 70's vibe to them among the highlights: R.Kelly shows up for two soon to be classic tracks Bad Man and Up And Outta Here.. Donell Jones grooving Do What I Gotta Do, Carl Thomas shows up with a track of his fab debut Emotional .. The tune Summer Rain ( One of my personal favorites! ). Ruff Ryders crew Parle with Jadakiss & Eve has the tune Fix Me lock down .. Of the hip hop tracks the two clearly best cuts are Outkast with UGK with their track Tough Guy and T.I.P ( Featuring Beanie Sigel with the track 2 Glock 9's.. All the other tracks are worth listening too.. Cant forget the centerpiece of the entire soundtrack Isaac Hayes rework of the legendary Theme From Shaft.. which is worth the price of the CD alone.. While this soundtrack may not reach the heights that Isacc Hayes masterpiece soundtrack did some thirty years ago.. However Shaft 2000 is still a great soundtrack and should be added to every one collection PICK IT UP

That This is the best soundtrack released for a very long time! Featurings such great artists as Donnell Jones, Carl Thomas, Liberty City and of course Isaac Hayes. The old school groove is really great without sounding dated. But the shining moment for me is R Kelly's song "Up and Outta Here". It is in the same league as "I Believe I Can Fly". Here is an artist who really puts an effort in his soundtrack work. Anyone who has heard "I Believe I Can Fly", "Gotham City", "Take My Time Tonight" and "Freak Me" will know that R Kelly is at his best on soundtracks. |
