One of the many configurations of the companion CD to the PBS Special,

This review is from: Music of Ireland · Welcome Home (MP3 Download)
This exclusive -to-Amazon MP3 download is just one of many permutations related to the 56-minute PBS special which aired during Pledge Month (March 2010) in the US. The DVD is currently - as of this date - only available at Barnes & Noble or from PBS stations. The music on the "album" is only tangentially related to the actual documentary as none of the songs are performances in the documentary. But, actually, the album does provide full performances - which the DVD does not. And, one track in particular, "You're The One", by Clannad's Moya Brennan (who hosts the PBS show) and the Pogue's lead singer Shane MacGowan, is are rare opportunity to hear two different Irish singers combine their voices.
While the purpose of both the film and the CD are to educate those who are not familiar with contemporary Irish music, the CD falls short here in that there are no liner notes to tell the listener about the lesser known artists included here. Of course, on any MP3 download there is no place for notes. So, you'll enjoy the music but not know much about Glen Hansard, Damien Dempsey or even who is playing as the group on the first track only listed as: "The Welcome Home Party". If you saw the documentary on PBS and enjoyed the newer music (as compared to the recordings by the Clancy Brothers) you'll probably enjoy this downloadable album. But, again the Brennan/MacGowan is the winner here and that track deserves five stars! Steve Ramm "Anything Phonographic"
