A good Introductory Theory Text,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Music Kit, Fourth Edition (Paperback)
This book was used in my Introduction to Music Theory class which was the entry level music theory class for music majors at Fullerton College.IN the class we covered up to chapter ten so becuase we would cover the material for the rest of the book in our next semester music theory course which is called "Harmony I". I think it did a good job at providing the essentials and basics of music theory. THe book was not boring and provided in a very interactive way. The book goest from the very rudiments to some of the topics found in first year harmony. This book also did a great job at introducing elementary sight-singing using several methods based on the instructors choice. I think the book should include elementary ear training so that the book would be complete. It did a good job of introducing rythms from easy to more complex. This book should provide a proper foundation for students who are advancing to high studies of music theory and muscianship. This book was easy to understand for the most part and did not go into scholary jargon. I would reccoment this text to anyone who wants a proper foundation of music theory. This book was very well written.

The first time I bought this Music Kit, another seller sent me only the Rhythm Reader book without the Workbook. So I bought it again for a second time and this seller delivered it. Fast shipping, condition was as described, and both two books were included. I definitely recommend this seller.

All About Notation,

This review is from: The Music Kit, Fourth Edition (Paperback)
The description for this book is confusing. The "kit" should include two books and a CD. The thicker paperback book is the Workbook. The second book is Rhythm Reader and Scorebook (referred to as RR) and includes an audio CD companion disc. There is an optional third piece to this "kit", the interactive computer disc (The Music Kit) - it is NOT included with this item.
The Rhythm Reader book is a set of exercises on how to read music rhythm. One hundred pages cover just about everything in the world anybody would ever need to eek out rhythm in printed music. The last seventy some pages are examples. The Workbook is, oddly, the main piece of this kit. This is a beginners study on music notation. Each chapter has many exercises. The whole kit concept of this book is horribly confusing. For a high school music class, this is a decent music book.

i received the Music Kit promptly in the mail and in new condition like it said in the details. the only thing i missed out on was the CD-ROM that i thought was suppose to come with it. But apparently you need to look for the words "Computer Assisted Version" when ordering this book.
i just wish i knew that before ordering this book. other than that i give it a 4 out of 5 stars. THANKS AMAZON! (wow this is the most boring thing i've done all day and its only 8:30am)

The Music Kit/4th Edition - Tom Manoff,
This review is from: The Music Kit, Fourth Edition (Paperback)
The two volumes of The Music Kit, 4th Edition, by Tom Manoff are very good...in fact the best text in this field I've yet seen. I have used it for over two decades in my college classes in Fundamentals of Music. But the editing is careless. There are several errors that need correcting. I called the editor last year to point out one egregious error, but nothing has been done to correct it.(I'd happily spend time with them to point these errors out if they were ever to contact me. I'm still waiting!)

Good kit to learn rhythms and music notation. Maybe you need some previous music knowledge, specially for later chapters. Very useful as a part of a class.

This was a required book for my sons music class in college. It had to be this one. We saved about 1/2 the cost by buying it here on amazon.
