"Music For Landing Planes By" is the debut publication of poetry by Eireann Lorsung who takes as her themes the makers, methods, and materials associates with common, daily objects we are all familiar with. Loursung's free verse poetry deftly combines art and artifact in a truly literate and sometimes whimsical use of language that engages the reader's imagination and appreciation from beginning to end. 'Dressmaker': Nothing touches like tan velvet touches/the palm. Now the cracks come, because what gives/without taking? -- doesn't exist. Say//you forget what is lanolin, what is raw about fleece/uncarded & unwashed. Say the silver feel/of charmeuse lines your sleep. You've lost//what there was before pins & needles, sound/a scissors makes through cloth on a hardwood floor, thick waist of the dressmaker's dummy. don't tell me//any more. Without Burano lace, without cinnabar/strung on a cuff, shantung and satin and netting and swiss:/no rich man, no camel, no needle's threatening eye.

Music for Landing Planes By is an intriguing collection of poetry by Éireann Lorsung. Lorsung draws from her experiences studying print making and drawing in Italy and teaching high school in rural France. And, what a remarkable life she has led. With the maturity and depth of her writing, the reader would not guess that this is Lorsung's debut collection of poetry.

Her craft is at its best in her poems "And Will Be," "Forgetting in Multiple" and "Printmaking." Lorsung's use of enjambment encourages the reader to look at the verse in its entirety and then reflect on the multiple meanings each line offers. Her poems find inspiration in nature and speak of blooming flowers and waiting out the winter thaw like "birds in the thatch." The beauty of Lorsung's poetry is that you can read her poems over and over and discover something new each time.
