Editorial Reviews

While the title of this recording plays on the then-popular idea of background and mood music, there's still plenty of jazz interest generated by Oklahoma-born guitarist Barney Kessel, one of the true heirs of Charlie Christian. The 1956 session matches Kessel with five reeds (including oboe, flute, and clarinets) and a fine rhythm section made up of other West Coast stalwarts: bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Shelly Manne. The arrangements range from the chamber music texture of "My Reverie" to the briskly swinging renditions of "Mountain Greenery" and "Fascinatin' Rhythm." Kessel plays wonderfully throughout, whether rendering rapid single-note lines or constructing the beautifully chorded introduction to the ballad "Laura." There are also fine solo contributions by Buddy Collette on flute and the superb pianist Jimmy Rowles. --Stuart Broomer

1956 was the year in which Barney Kessel received just about every music award short of the Pulitzer Prize...and this album is a direct reflection of that. And, it is just as compelling a 'read' today as it was back then...... a 'must have' for any serious fan of jazz guitar. He not only does the playing, ( with help from such greats as Buddy Clark, Shelly Manne, Andre Previn, Buddy Collette, Jimmy Rowles and more ! ) the great arrangements are his own as well. He does it all. 'nuf said.
The remastered CD is the frosting on the cake. Track it down. It's out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars West Coast Barney Kessel February 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD
~ Barney Kessel's guitar playing originated in Charlie Christian but through years of studio work backing a multitude of singers and instrumentalists in the jazz, pop, and classic worlds his style grew to incorporate the best of swing, bop, and beyond. The studio work plus a brief tenure as a member of the Oscar Peterson Trio helped Barney to develop an unparalleled ability to accompany and solo in a variety of settings and styles. Contemporary Records signed Barney to make a series of excellent jazz records from 1953 to 1961 (including several trio sessions under the name "The Poll Winners" with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne). Barney's Contemporary recordings just may be the best of his career as this CD clearly shows.
~ Compared to his first three albums for Contemporary, MUSIC TO LISTEN TO BARNEY KESSEL BY places Barney in a unique setting. Here Barney is surrounded by five woodwind and reed players and a rhythm section anchored by Shelly Manne on drums and featuring either Andre Previn or Jimmy Rowles on piano and Red Mitchell or Buddy Clark on bass. The recording sessions took place in August, October, and December 1956. The addition of the five woodwind and reed players gives this album much more of the laid-back West Coast bop feeling than Barney's first three Contemporary albums. One of the nicest tracks on the album is "Laura" - a duet featuring Barney and Red Mitchell.
