5.0 out of 5 stars The Red Norvo To Listen To, July 8, 2010
Vibraphonist Red Norvo is probably best remembered for his various "Trios" (see Red Norvo Trio with Tal Farlow and Charles Mingus: The Savoy Sessions and Trios for examples -- I reviewed the latter), but the cheekily titled "Music To Listen To Red Norvo By" is my personal favorite. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a sextet but it is quite a lineup on this 1957 outing -- Buddy Collette on flute, Bill Smith on clarinet, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. The original compositions by a number of interesting jazzmen of the late 50s, including Jack Montrose, Lennie Niehaus, Duane Tatro and of course Norvo himself, show all the possibilities an expanded chamber jazz group can offer. However, the real highlight comes from the true classical/jazz musician of the bunch, Bill Smith (see my review of his Folk Jazz), as his four movement "Divertimento" is absolutely brilliant. If you want to listen to "Music to Listen To" just make sure you do it soon, for like so many other OJC CDs, this Red has been given the pink slip.
