4.0 out of 5 stars 19 year old saxophonist and composer shows remarkable talent and maturity on his fourth recording, October 25, 2007
This review is from: ...And the Music Lives On (Audio CD)
Shawn was featured by jazz master Billy Thomas Jr. on the CBS Sunday Morning television show around the release of this CD in 1995-and when you hear this CD and see the video, you can understand why. Very much in a straight ahead mode, Shawn shows great talent and maturity. Its hard to believe that at 19, this was his 4th recording featuring his own compositions-the two covers are Coltane's Giant Steps and Nocturne No. 5 by Chopin and Wallace aquits himself admirably. Of course the late Tony Williams was only 16 when he started playing with Miles Davis, but still, especially these days, Shawn was an impressive 19 year old for this recording. With the late great Eddie Russ on piano and veteran trombonist Sherm Mitchell bringing depth and experience to this talented ensemble, age becomes meaningless-it's just excellent straight ahead jazz.
