Lonesome Dove soundtrack,

This is a hauntingly beautiful CD. I have played it over and over and have never gotten tired of it. I know people who have requested that this music be played at their funerals. A great sound track that brings to mind the struggles of Gus and Woodrow and of course, of us all.

First, the movie the music is connected with is absolutley amazing (yet heartbreaking). Second, for the music, I am a particular fan of movie music, and this album is beyond 5 star rating!! I am well satisfied with it. Every time I listen to this CD, I am deeply moved. You will never regret buying this well conducted album!

This musical score is an auditory delight! The music is moving and emotional. One can feel the struggle, the granduer, the love, and the pain that is evoked by each chord and verse.
It makes you think of far away places, mountains, valleys, lonesome plains, and the ever present movement of life. One can get lost in the notes and feel themselves transcended through time and space to another world and another time where our collective expirience as a country and a people was new and bold. To a life on the edge of the frontier when freedom was more than a word it was a way of life. It is America! The way it was and the way we all wish it could be once again.

Basil Poledouris scored big in _Lonesome Dove_. The only other soundtrack I liked enough to by before was John Barry's _Dances With Wolves_, and I think Poledouris' work ranks above it.
I didn't find anything artistically new or challenging in the work. Some parts, like the tune for the hymn "How Firm a Foundation" representing Arkansas, even seemed formulaic. (Ever since hearing Virgil Thompson's film score to _The River_, that hymn tune sticks in my head as if it were the most fitting leitmotif for the Deep South.) What makes the score so wonderful is that it works! So rather than snub Poledouris for offering tunes for the bourgeois, I applaud him for making even the predictable sound so beautiful. The lush orchestration of his melodies adds emotion and drama to the series, and yet it is pleasing enough in itself as to not need the accompanying video. I brought the CD on vacation to add some punch to the beautiful landscapes I drove through. It made a nice drive even better.

This music has generated positive comments from friends who have never seen or heard of the TV miniseries. Not that I have many friends who aren't fans. For those who are true aficionados, it evokes the memories and emotions of the beloved saga. Very moving. Buy it.
