Editorial Reviews

Probably the most popular, iconic mood music album ever made, Jackie Gleason s Music for Lovers Only set the stage for untold imitators to come with its evocative album artwork and lush, sweeping soundscapes. Released as a 10" LP in 1952, it set the record which still stands! for most weeks in the Top Ten Album charts at 153, and hit the charts yet again in 1955 when it was released as a 12" LP. But here is where the history of Music for Lovers Only becomes, like most romances, complicated. The original 10" included only eight tracks, but Capitol's first 12" issue of the album added eight more for a total of 16; subsequently, however, the album was reissued on LP with 12 tracks, and the out-of-print sole CD release of Music for Lovers Only featured just the eight tracks from the original 10" release.

Now, for the first time ever on CD, Real Gone Music is restoring this classic album to its full, 16-track length, with its glorious, original artwork intact another first! and in its original mono. As for those wondering what musical contribution Mr. Gleason made to the album, some say Gleason conceived of melodies in his head and described them vocally to his assistants. But when Bobby Hackett, whose wistful trumpet lines were the focal point of the Gleason sound and of this album, was asked what Jackie contributed to the recordings, he replied: "He brought the checks." Either way, Music for Lovers Only stands as The Great One's greatest musical achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, relaxing music September 6, 2012

I bought this original LP, and many other Gleason titles, at some flea market a million years back, and tho it's been on cd before, this is the one to get....perfect music for an evening at home, with a mate, or just by yourself! Maybe a tad melancholy for some, but I LOVE that, and these are all beautifully performed selections.......

4.0 out of 5 stars +1/2 - Jackie Gleason's moody mood music September 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Jackie Gleason was a man of many talents, not the least of which was his ear for music. Gleason didn't write a great deal, nor play any instruments, but as a musical director he picked the songs and arrangers, and conducted the orchestra in creating a lush body of romantic mood music. For this first album, originally released as an eight-song 10" in 1952, he featured the cornet playing of Bobby Hackett. Hackett became a regular on Gleason's recordings (see the 4-CD The Complete Sessions for more), and here he helps establish the intimate, forlorn feel of Gleason's recordings. These are neither the syrupy sounds of the `50s, though they include lush string scores, nor the swinging sounds of the `60s. The mood, particularly in the searching tone of Hackett's lonely horn, blends dreamy seduction, the tears of Sinatra's Where Are You? and the fatalism of film noir. The song list draws from the great American songbook, including titles by Rodgers & Hart, George & Ira Gershwhin and Mel Torme; Gleason's original "My Love for Carmen" closes the set. The original eight-song LP was expanded to sixteen tracks in 1955, all in mono; a 12-track stereo re-recording was issued in 1958. Real Gone reaches back to the 16-song lineup, expanding on Collectors' Choice's out-of-print two-fer. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2012 Hyperbolium]

5.0 out of 5 stars THE SUMMIT OF TOP QUALITY ELEVATOR MUSIC March 3, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Jackie Gleason's music has a unique style about it. Every now & then you'd hear it on The Honeymooners, particularly in the middle of the night when Ralph is getting very sleepy. I never really understood what "background" or "elevator" music was until I started listening to the music in Gleason's prolific collection. I now have about 15 LPs that I have converted to CDs and I enjoy each & ever one of them.

As a writer, I do most of my work late at night. Normally, I cannot listen to music when I write. I work in a room that resembles a cavern. Sometimes, however, things get a bit too quiet. That's when I put on Gleason's music. It actually helps me think.

Technically, the CD has been faulted for not being loud enough. I find that this is a very common problem with most CDs. I get around this problem by ripping the tracks into a folder using a Freeware program. Then, I bring them into Cool Edit Pro and amplify them, usually, between 3x and 6x. It all depends on the track. I do this with all of my CDs and not just with this one. Other than that, I recommend this CD to anyone who likes Jackie Gleason's style of music.

4.0 out of 5 stars music December 19, 2012

i was raised on this type of music so bought it for reasons of nostalgia. the quality of the recording is good but not great. i have a lousy CD player so i am not sure if the issue is the old recording or my equipment. likely the latter. have to admit that i picked this CD over the other Jackie Gleason recordings because of the cover which depicts a time gone by.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music to relax by June 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Love the 'instrumental arrangements of Gleason. But the recording 'remastering' could have been done better to bring forth the several 'background' players Mr. Gleason always used to enhance the arrangements. I have a few other of Mr. Gleasons CD's and I could write the exact same thing about all of them. Wonderful music, but agfain not all the instuments being played aren't done justice. Some instruments have been enhaced in favor of the rest of the Orchestras players which makes for 'odd' sounds in some arrangements. Still, I love listening to most of them and enjoy the different way Mr. Gleason arranged many of the 'familiar' tunes of the day to make them, in my opinion, more enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music For Lovers Only June 12, 2013

Another great CD with the most beautiful horn in the world of Bobby Hackett with the Jackie Gleason orchestra. I listen to this music over and over again. There just isn't another trumpet/cornet player like Bobby. I would highly recommend this beautiful CD to anyone who appreciates the haunting music of the past.
