4.0 out of 5 stars Something old, something new, July 16, 2001

This review is from: Music for MacBeth (Audio CD)
This collection of instrumental pieces has been used to accompany a Welsh production of MacBeth, directed by Geoff Moore, who has also written the liner notes for this cd. Those of you familiar with Robin's work will notice that there is some old and some new work to be found on this cd. "Dance for chess pieces", "South Bute Two Step" and "Symonds Yat Woods", for example, can be found on "Music for the newly born", while "Bakaskie", "Nou let us sing", "My Lady Balclughe's Ayre", "Leslie's Joog" and "Mall Simme" can be found on "The legacy of Scottish Harpers, volume 2". We even find some Merry Band stuff, the instrumentals "Her scattered gold" and "Port London early" off "American Stonehenge".

So, what's new then? In fact, I think only the first four pieces are composed for the MacBeth event, and they are absolutely great. I haven't seen the play, but the music must have been a great addition.

Four stars for a cd with only four new compositions may seem a bit lavish, but all in all this is a fine collection, especially if you don't have the foreknowledge of some of Robin's lesser known records.
