Editorial Reviews

Review

"Music Medicine brings home to our hearts the truth that music is a most organic medicine. Christine Stevens reveals how the intricate beauty of harmony, rhythm, and song course through our veins, uniting us with the cosmic music of the universe."
-Michael Bernard Beckwith Author of Spiritual Liberation

" Music Medicine is an interstate of sound that awakens, soothes, dances, and silences us."
-DON CAMPBELL Author of The Mozart Effect

From the Author

This book is an invitation to take part in making your own music and to share it more widely in the healing that is taking place on the planet. Even though music is already in you, this book is a guide to remembering, reconnecting, and discovering the healing benefits of sound. This is the story of an ancient artifact--or perhaps a fact of art--that has underscored thousands of years of humanity's development: the medicine of music. This treasure has been with us since the beginning of time. No war can destroy it. No one religion can claim it. Mystics of different faiths have heard its song, shamans have traveled its rhythmic beats to invisible realms, and healers have carried its tune to wounded souls. It is present in the symphony of the notes of our lives, the harmony between people, and the inner music that is unique to each person as a living instrument of his or her own song.

I want to serve as your guide to discover music's medicine--the sound, play, passion, and pause are waiting for you, a sonic remedy composed at the core of your being. I will take you through the four elements of music's medicine--rhythm, harmony, melody, and silence--with guided practices that show you practical ways to orchestrate healing and wholeness in your life and in the lives of those you serve. Then we'll move inward to the fifth element, which is the music within you, a quintessence that blends all four elements into the human instrument. Finally, we'll explore how music's medicine can orchestrate change in the world and for the planet.

This is a book that sings. Free online music playlists offer a soundtrack to the teachings on the groove, song, harmony, and silence within you. If you are in the fields of education, therapy, health care, or personal coaching, the guided practices can augment your work. If you are a parent looking to give your children the creativity and expression of music, you can incorporate the practices into your family life. If you are a musician, you can become more well rounded and create music that resonates more deeply from your soul.

This book is about a paradigm change. It's not about being taught music; it's about music teaching us. It's not about practicing music; it's about music as practice. It's not about talent; it's about truth. It's not only about loving music; it's about living music. It's about finding your way into a "sound" health strategy that is joyful, creative, harmonious, and fun.

As a drum circle facilitator and musician in Florida, I was eager to read another resource book to support my passion for drumming and the global connection we are creating. So when Christine's book hit the racks, I was one of the first to purchase it. As typical of me when reading a guide, an educational book, a drum resource, I had my trusty yellow highlighter and my notebook to transfer the information pertinent to my interests. By the middle of the first chapter, I realized I was highlighting almost all of the pages and transferring almost all of the content to my notepad. After I good laugh, I put them all down, I laid back in the recliner and read, read, read the entire book. This book is so full of new information, ancient history, music & drumming theory, cultural nuances, and more -- that I realized it was to be absorbed, embraced, and embodied - much like she mentions in her book about the music medicine. To really resonate with the energy and intention of the book, we must feel its RHYTHM in our BODIES; LISTEN to its MELODY with our HEARTS; HARMONIZE with stories told and recreate these stories with our circles and our SOULS; and then absorb the essence and purpose it radiates and sit in SILENCE allowing it to enter our SPIRIT core. I am delighted to have this book as my #1 drum bible resource.....it is one of those books that each time you read it you see, hear, and feel something different, something helpful, something to share. I've already used the beginning chapter about the 4 elements of our body and rhythm, in a recent full moon drum pow wow. It allowed us to listen differently to the music and allow it to heal and inspire us. It was and will be a life-changer! Thank you Christine Stevens, my mentor from afar, you've done it again!

A beautiful eloquent read; it is so simple, touching ones basic roots, that it is profound. We come to realize that music, like life, has many facets. The deeper our understanding and participation, the deeper and more meaningful our life becomes. To fulfill ones intellectual callings, numerous research studies support the powerful effects of music. The descriptions of Christine's multi-cultural experiences emphasize the humanistic elements that foster the oneness of humanity. Reading this book is much more than a literary experience; it is a complete experiential trip when combined with the accompanying musical selections, which enrich us in multiple ways -bringing not only awareness but joy and spiritual centering. For those who felt previously that music was just a wonderful"listening" experience; your horizons will be greatly enhanced.
To quote Christine,"We don't make music; music makes us."

I have followed Christine Stevens' work from the other side of the continent for years and have purchased her materials previously. However I do have two issues with this latest book.

1-I couldn't put it down
2-Had I continued to underline I would have ended up doing so to the entire volume.

I highly recommend this book, written in clear and understandable form with both better than competent understanding of the subject matter and generosity toward those of us who don't.

'Music Medicine' guides you on an inspiring journey into the essential and inter-related aspects of music. Drawing on her unique experiences as a therapist, musician and seeker, Christine Stevens does an amazing job at weaving together the medicinal and spiritual aspects of music, and offering practices that are truly healing, uplifting, and yes, FUN! The concepts are well explained and also accompanied by an online playlist of fantastic music - if the text doesn't convince you, the music will. The book relies not only on the time-honored wisdom of ancient sages, but also on modern-day scientific studies, which are explained in a very easy-to-read and entertaining fashion. One of the great messages I took away from reading the book was this: LIVING the music is as important as listening to it. Christine lives the music, and this book will help you to do so as well. The results are life-changing, the healing is profound. I can't recommend it enough.

I really loved this book.
As someone with not a lot of theoretical experience with music but with big love for it,
this book inspired me to just get in and have a go, and to do it with energy and heart.
