Editorial Reviews

* Recorded in one long session on a single day. * Appreciated by many of the musicians involved in Miles Davis' original recordings. * Features original artwork by longtime Davis painting collaborator Jo Gelbard. "Gerry Gibbs has created a wonderful reminiscence of a very important period in modern music ... He has assembled a great group of musicians and they are up to the task of tackling this music of Miles Davis. I can hear the love. Thanks, Gerry." -- Gary Bartz, Miles Davis Alumni, 1970

If you dig Electric Miles, then you certainly should get lots of enjoyment out of this project. Gerry Gibbs has put together a great band of young cats who totally get in the grooves of Miles's freakishly adventurous electric excursions during the 67-75 period. So if you are always up for another interpretation of Masqualero, Right Off, Black Satin, Miles Runs the Voodoo Down, or Directions, then this one should be right up your alley. There are also a couple of ringers, electric versions of Pinocchio and Nefertiti, which were never in live book during Miles's electric period. Most of the players deserve mention, including trumpeter Brian Swartz, reedmen Doug Webb and Rob Hardt, Andy Langham on keys, guitarist Mike Hoffman, and bassists Brandon Rivas (electric) and Essiet Essiet (acoustic).

If you're a Miles Davis fan and like the Big Fun, and Bitches Brew LPs, you should like this Gerry Gibbs CD. Nice horn playing, very good drums, and nice arrangements of Miles tunes. Well played and in the true spirit of Miles' music.

The electric period of Miles Davis, perhaps beginning with Miles In The Sky around 1968, is just like his acoustic period (oh that second quintet!!!) in that within the period there are stylistic and artisitc variations. Gary Gibbs does not greatly highlight these variances in this recording. It's hard to say if this is a 1970 band or a 1973 band. Or is it the Electric Thrasher Orchestra channeling the spirit of Miles Davis? My guess is the recording is best represented by the latter.

This is a good CD. The musicians are quite energetic and quite competent. The vibe is there! I like it. Gibbs implies that at least an equal amount of material from this session remains unreleased. I commit to buy a volume 2!

By the way another artist who can get the vibe right is Wadada Leo Smith. Heart's Reflections is the most recent release. He and Henry Kaiser also did three or four recording under the 'Yo Miles' title. These recordings now seem a bit cumbersome to me in retrospect, but I also still like the recordings then and now.

Anyway, if you are a fan of Miles Davis and his Great Plugged In Period (Go Pete Cosey!!!), then you will probably enjoy this two CD set of interpretations of songs from that period. Four stars from me! Buy it and do not steal it! Support these artists. They are not going to do a million units.
