Most Helpful Customer Reviews

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Stephen Midgley on November 15, 2011
This CD is part of the superb series on the music of Philippe Rogier, performed by the vocal group Magnificat directed by Philip Cave. Rogier was one of the very finest of late renaissance Franco-Flemish composers, a versatile genius so highly regarded in his time that at the age of only 25 he attained the remarkable position of maestro de capilla at the court of King Philip II of Spain. Sadly, Rogier died at 35 from causes unknown to us, but nevertheless the music that he left us is still wonderful - as will already be evident to those who have heard other recordings in the series so far.

On the present disc, Magnificat bring us two of Rogier's masses in very different styles - one a parody mass on a motet by Clemens non Papa, 'Inclita stirps Jesse', and the other a cantus firmus mass based on the vowels of the king's title 'Philippus Secundus Rex Hispaniae'. The programme is further varied by the inclusion of other appropriate works, namely a couple of Cabezón organ pieces, a Rogier motet played by the instruments of His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts, and of course the Clemens motet on which Rogier based his parody mass. It's worth devoting a few lines to this first mass, because this is a glorious work which, moreover, is performed here quite beautifully. The disc begins with Clemens' motet, which is one of the loveliest pieces I've heard by this most graceful and approachable of renaissance composers and provides an ideal model for Rogier's parody. The music of the motet is based on two simple and distinctive motifs which are wonderfully expressive of the devotional Marian text (in English, 'The Stem of Jesse produced a beautiful branch on which bloomed a flower of great perfume...').
