This is a very clear and well written book that i wish i had known was around when i first became interested in recording and releasing my songs all those years ago ! Well it's with me now and it's great to have a complete and up-to-date grasp of the music BUSINESS a songwriter, artist, music publisher, independent label and 'record company' performance, recording, distribution in any and all media. You name it...what you need to know is in this book.... Thanks Todd and Jeff Brabec...sorry i found you so late but to quote Paul Simon..." thank God i found you in time "

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Musicians October 12, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have used this book front to back. It's totally thorough and outlines the different necessary terms and actions one needs to take as a musician. However, it's also very legal heavy in words. I recommend using a dictionary to keep yourself in check and understanding the text. Take notes! It's a musician's go-to guide!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cliff notes on music business December 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Music Money and Success 7th Edition: The Insider's Guide to Making Money in the Music Business Were I forced to name one book, and only one book, that is essential reading for anyone considering a career in the music business, this would be THE one. After 40 years in the commercial music business, I can't approach the combined knowledge and ability to communicate on easy-to-understand terms the way Todd and Jeff do. Together, these guys have probably worked in as many facets of the music business as I, but they bring to the topic both academic-level study and real-world examples beyond their mere years in the business. Each has unique perspectives on the business, and people who know both can find the "personalities" in their book, which is updated every one or two years. They have seen (and often worked through) every scam and scheme in the music business, and are "almost" as old as I am, but you'd never know it from their research and work, OR their ability to stay current, or their personal styles and contacts. Identical twins, they can (and often have) passed for each other, but each has his special areas of concentration in the business that, combined, produce a more balanced product than a single author could. If you are looking for an entertaining "cheat sheet" on the music business, this is it. "Music Money & Success" packs more bang for the buck than anything I've encountered. There are fantastic works that go into greater detail in most of the areas of the "biz" than is covered here, but this book could be the primer for any of them. I don't get a cut from their sales, but if I did, I would say exactly the same thing. Read more ›

As an executive in the music business and professional composer and songwriter, this is by far the best book on the music business. I have read them all. The kindle search is invaluable and the paperback index is exceptionally well written so you can jump to exactly what you need at the moment without having to read through the entire book or chapter. Whoever said this is just a book about jobs in the music business has obviously not read the book. It covers every aspect of where royalties are generated from, how to collect them, performance rights information, copyright info, links to many useful organizations, great chapter on publishing, mechanical rates, deals, contracts and so much more I can't list it all. This is an excellent resource for film and television composers and songwriters and I highly recommend it!
