Adapting Shakespeare to film is very hard. There has to be a reason to do it in my opinion. If the filmmaker has something to offer to enrich the story then I'm all for it. If all they want to do is do a film version of the play then I'm usually not on board. With Julie Taymor I really believe it is worth it because her vision is so very unique and she has the ability to translate from stage to screen. Julie Taymor's The Tempest is a visually striking adaptation with an amazing cast. It may feel a bit distanced from the viewer but is still a unique experience and is worth a viewing for the cast alone. Elliot Goldenthal had the task of scoring Shakespeare here, which is no easy task.

Goldenthal is an Oscar winning composer who has scored all of Julie Taymor's features and was pitted with this task. How do you score around Shakespeare's dialogue? Well, the answer is very carefully. You have to score around the words without tripping over them yet still have your score accentuate the images and characters. Did he succeed? Very much so. In the film the score doesn't call attention to itself but is still effective. The style very much matches Julie's vision as it did in Frida and Across The Universe. He blends electronics with traditional instruments for a modern sounding score that works. The real highlight though are the songs. As you know The Tempest features many songs that Shakespeare wrote the lyrics to. So, Elliot arranged these songs and made them part of the overall soundscape of the film.

Overall the score blends well and leaves room for the dialogue to breathe. It may feel a bit choppy but that's because there is not much score in the film. It's not the type of score that will hook you, but it will grow on you after a second listen. Especially if you're a Goldenthal fan.

The soundtrack for the movie, "The Tempest" is as magical as the movie itself. It will bring back the feelings and emotions you felt when you watched this masterpiece. Ethereal and moving, its soundtrack is excellent for relaxation. Some parts can be used for dance, others for meditation.
Take the musical trip.

I really miss Elliott Goldenthal & am really glad that this soundtrack came out today. He is by far one of the greatest composers in Hollywood. He makes genuine strides in film music & his contribution is truly invaluable. I just wish he would do more soundtracks.
