pay attention for sweet vocals on 'music is my sanctuary' which has been on top of my my playlist for last 3 months, besides that makes me muttering it's melody every time, very catchy you know what I'm sayin?. other cuts are groovy indeed with Mr. Bartz's sax touches. a recommended funk/soul/jazz hybrid from 1977..

I purchased Bartz's "Blue Chronicles" a few years back and liked that a lot, but this album, recorded in the mid-1970s, is the real gem. It's not long, but it's packed with great songs and a stellar bunch of musicians who let loose and lay down a wicked groove. Any fans of 70s-era Donald Byrd or Grover Washington will like this jazz-funk hybrid. Great stuff!

A lost funky classic. The Mizell brothers produced this gem. If you like the sounds of mid 70's Donald Byrd or Bobby Humphrey, you'll like this. Not as R&B influenced as the aforementioned artists but definately in a soulful groove. Bartz really branched out on this one!

One of Gary's best albums. I've loved this album for years and was overwhelmed when I found it on CD. Good reproduction.

a dud; jazzy disco, or funky disco or jazzy funk?,

Eddie Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Patrice Rushen, and Gary all did the same thing: created a form of American music, then went too far during the disco craze in the '70s. Strip away the overuse of high hat, generic singing with falsetto male and crystal clear female, excellent musicians, and you have Eddie, Herbie, PAtrice, and/or Gary playing great solos. I guess it's the vocals that kill me in the end; mix that down and make guitars louder and you get Herbie's Suntouch, an album I love. Instead, you get this Brothers Johnson commercial stuff. Great for dancing, though. Still, I would have avoided this if I'd known how repetitive it sometimes is. I'll stick with Miles Davis "On the Corner" or Alphonson Johnson's Moonshadows. If you like Donald Byrd's disco phase, then buy Music is My Sanctuary
