This review is from: Music Needs You (Audio CD)
Jazz guitarist Ryan Blotnick's new set, "Music Needs You," should more aptly be titled, "Music Needs Ryan Blotnick." His liquid-smooth style ignites this glowing nine-track collection. Beginning with the subtle grace of opener, "Winter Melt," Blotnick and his incredible band take listeners on an ear-openning sound journey, bringing to mind a wistful collaboration of Pat Matheny and John Scofield, with a smidgen of Weather Report added. Blotnick's bandmates enhance the experience on the title track, featuring Albert Sanz (piano), Joe Smith (drums) and Perry Wortman (bass). The piano runs are particularly alluring, countered lightly by Smith's steady, but light, touch on cymbals, giving way to Wortman's bass flourishes, and then capped by Pete Robbins on alto saxophone, a veritable spring shower of notes giving way to a blue sky. Another standout track is "The Quiet Space Left Behind," which lopes along nicely, and captures the title to a "T". While Blotnick may be the monicker for the band, this is truly a sublime team effort in sound.
