Format: Audio CD
This is a Smithsonian-Folkways album of music that accompanied an exhibition. Thus, the selections meet specific requirements of the art and artifacts; yet, I find it an exceptionally good anthology of tribal music of New Mexico that make a fine portait. The first series of traditional drum and rattle dance tunes from the various pueblos (Picuris, San Juan, Taos) of the Zuni and Diné/Navajo communities, while similar in style, differ by tone and tempo. With close listening, they can reach into the marrow. They are more danceable than meditative. Simple two-step dances dominate. The mood shifts dramatically at track 11, with a quiet flute song. What follows are modern songs and tunes, bringing Native American traditions into contemporary situations. Paul Ortega's The Handshake always chokes me up with its humanity and compassion. Ortega, accompanied by Sharon Burch, next present a bright, skipping tune of joy. His section concludes with a simple song of traveling. Again, a flute marks a divide followed by a lovely, happy, anthem-like welcoming song by Burch. A third solo flute piece leads to a contemporary take on tradition: it is a round dance song sung in modern harmony, with flute and electronic keyboard drone. It is beautiful. The final track is sung by Geraldine Barney, a song arising from the loneliness of the Native American in the modern city. A booklet provides details about the tracks, the artists, the instruments, and the different styles.

3 of 9 people found the following review helpful By John Smith on March 10, 2006
Format: Audio CD
This disc isn't for everyone, and I like it partially because of how I only spent 3 bucks on it at Goodwill, but it has some surprisingly beautiful moments. They are discussed below in their entirety.

"Zuni Courting Flute Song" is the first great song on the album (all the ones leading up to it are boring dance-tribe songs that all sound identical and are extraordinarily long and repetitive). A truly beautiful song. After that, "The Handshake" (performed by A. Paul Ortega) follows, and it is an original, folksy song with an unexpected, English, spoken-word section in the middle of it. Interesting, and definitely better then any of the tribal songs preceding it, but it still sounds odd and rather poorly-produced (the song has a weird echo that is apparently intentional, but it should be removed: it gives me a horrid headache). 2 unoriginal and dull folk-songs follow "The Handshake," but after those there is another beautiful flute piece, but it is, unfortunately, barely over one minute. After that, the best song on the entire disc plays, and it alone is reason enough to buy this CD. It is titled "Welcome Home," and it is written and preformed (rather spectacularly, if I may add) by Sharon Burch. The guitar /voice combo play against each other perfectly, and one can only be depressed that all the other songs aren't as emotionally moving. After that there are two great flute pieces and a guitar-ballad in the same sound as Sharon Burch's "Welcome Home." One may go as far as to say that it is a horrible imitation, but it's still a powerful closer. Also, this disc's booklet is one of the most comprehensible, interesting, and best-put-together booklets that I've ever read. Incredibly informative and excellent B&W photographs of various artists and instruments that they used.
