The Majesty of the Organ.,

This review is from: Music for Organ, Brass & Percussion (Audio CD)
This is an unbeliveably good recording. It's the best organ music I've ever heard and the brass section is also excellent. Just have a listen to the deep bass of the organ. Buy it and take a listen on a sunday morning and you'll swear you're in church. Excellent quality.

I enjoy all types of music. I think that this CD would appeal to anyone, not just classical fans. The musical selections are high energy and powerful.

The only problem I have is the brass passages are too loud! They should have cranked up the organ to match the volume of the Empire Brass, otherwise, it's very good.

The quality of this CD work is only matched by a handful of other brass & organ projects. The quality of sound and balance of the instruments is astounding. Every note can be heard with clarity and of course Empire Brass (and friends) is impeccable!

What lovely sounds emanate from this CD.
Exciting, well chosen pieces with contrasts of softer and louder. Just what I hoped it would be.

good music, bad recording,

I bought this album for the Gigout "Dialogue". The organ is given the role of the "echo" , an effect you may have heard in recordings of solo organ where the front pipes are played antiphonally with the pipes in the balcony, This gives the brass an annoying prominence even though the brass is played audacularly. I solved this for myself by recording it on tape while manipulating the recording level. The other recordings are more balanced, and the Strauss piece is very beautifully blended.

Music for organ and brass is really music mostly for brass.,

The brass playing is elegant in soft sections and has lots of fanfare in the loud sections. The choice and ordering of the pieces will keep the casual listener interested. The combination of dramatic fanfare stuff punctuated by quieter stuff seems about right for maximum listener appeal if you're not too snooty for this kind of program. Practically speaking, this is a brass recording since the organ lacks the muscle to keep up with the brass. In some of the pieces, the Empire Brass are joined by five additional players, and the organ gets completely clobbered. If you get this mainly for the brass and you don't mind the too small organ, and you are not one to turn your nose up at a recording designed to capture the interest of the common listener, then you will probably like this.

Michael Murray does it again!,

This is a very good piece of music. I think it is a little rushed when compared to E Power Biggs "Music for Organ, Brass and Percussion". I'm not sure if I like all of the style, but overall it is very listenable and rounded organ work.

I agree with Mr Hazelwood. This recording is lack luster and I usually like Michael Murray's recording. Too much brass and no organ. I agree that Columbia (Sony) should re-release the E. Power Biggs Music or Organ Brass and Percussion. That is the best recording and the correct mixture of instrments I have heard in a long time. I recently sent them (Columbia) an e-mail making that request. Maybe if they get enough e-mails, they would know that we demand the best of the best.
