1.0 out of 5 stars Badly Designed, But Strong, September 20, 2011

There are a whole bunch of bad design features that outweigh the one good thing about this clamp, which is that it is strong and stays put. Now, on to the meat of this review.

First, the clamping screw is MUCH longer than it needs to be, and depending upon the mics and mic clips you use, can get in the way of desired mic positioning.

Second, this clamp utilizes a top-to-bottom clamping design in which the top of the clamping mechanism is placed on the top of the drum rim, and the bottom of the clamping mechanism hooks under the bottom of the rim. The mechanism is then tightened, supposedly "sandwich-ing" the rim between the two clamping pieces. While this is a great concept in theory, unfortunately in real life, if you look closely at the bottom of the clamps when mounted, you'll see that the design of the bottom hook results in contact with the underside of the outer flange of the drum head instead of the rim, so the clamp ends up putting upward pressure on the drum head instead of clamping onto the bottom of the rim. Not only is that not good for the drum head, this ends up pulling the drum out of tune! I've tested this on multiple kits with different rims and the result is the same. If you use a 2-ply head, looking at the head from the top you can actually see the oil between the two films literally moving as you tighten the clamp!

Third, there is a pastic sleeve that covers the bottom hook, presumably to help prevent marring of your hardware. Problem is that this sleeve tears very easily, especially at the "tip" of the hook. And, because the width of the jaw of the hook is wider than it needs to be (which is what actually causes the hook to contact the drum head), on some drums the hook contacts the shell of the drum. So, when that plastic sleeve tears, you've got metal coming into direct contact with the drum shell!

As if all that's not bad enough, the mic mounting rail is positioned in a way that even if the clamping screw was shorter, you still can't get short drum mics low enough to be in the proper position. Too bad there are all these things wrong with this clamp, because they do stay put, and the clamp is made of steel, which means it will endure pretty much anything you can throw at it, but it's poor design results in it not being able to be used long enough to test its endurance.

After searching many sites and browsing different products I found these. The DM50's are rugged and are heavy duty enough that I don't have to worry about a missed stroke disaster. They install easily and work perfectly for amplification. Plus they are designed for perfect mic placement. I'd recommend the DM50 for a drummer at any stage of the game, whether touring, or recording. This is a very good product.

I put this on a floor tom, and it held well a few times, but the plastic gripper thing slides off the hoop now. It seems to be at the wrong angle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, September 20, 2011

I just received my clips today and they are way beefier (is that a word?) than I expected. I am not sure about crosstalk as of yet since I haven't used them on a recording or gig yet but they have rubber insulating grommets between where the mic clip attaches, and where it fastens to the drum rim. The tension part of this clip is heavily rubber coated and is easily attached. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the sturdy construction of these clips. I have the Shure clips and needed a few more but now I am going to replace those and order 3 more of these. I highly recommend these clips!

This drum mic clip fits my sm57 shure mic (just like the one in the stock image) and seems to clip onto the rim just fine. The knobs can be a little tricky to deal with, but once it's tightened it doesn't move around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job..., March 8, 2011

Alright I've been using this in my home studio. I bought 4 of these two months ago. The rubber on the clamp tares easily, but doesn't come apart completely and is still very usable. The other reviews that say this is hard to put on and isn't made to grab on to their drums just don't know how to put them on correctly. You have to grab the bottom rim first and then push it in until the top of the rim is gripped also. Then you can tighten them. Took me little time to figure out how they clip on, and it's easy now.I do some heavy playing and these things have yet to come loose. The only thing that is difficult to adjust is the angle at which they point down! It really shouldn't be that hard, but it gets complicated and takes me a while to unscrew the mic clip, turn the washer and screw the mic clip back on until I can get it to point straight down. I don't regret my purchase, and I can't complain about the price because these things aren't made cheap. Beats having a ton of mic stands around my set!

Started breaking apart after one use. Stripping out, falling apart, doesn't fit easily around hoop, and doesn't look like the one pictured.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great clip but...., November 28, 2010
This review is from: Music People DM50 On Stage DM50 Drum Mic Clip (Rim Mount) (Electronics)
I bought 3 of these clips and after two years of studio use they have lost their grip. The clips clamp tight onto the rim with a small rubber clamp. Over time the rubber has fallen apart and can no longer grip the drum rim. Sad... the clips are very nice, made of metal and have shock absorption but without replacement rubber grips I would look for something that will have a harder time deteriorating so quickly.

Getting a mic positioned in the tight area around a snare drum with a normal stand can be tricky. The is the PERFECT clamp to put a mic on a snare drum. I use it with a Shure SM-57 mic, and get excellent results.
