Great introduction to music theory, December 7, 2011
This review is from: Music Principles for the Skeptical Guitarist Vol. 1 : The Big Picture (Paperback)
This is advertised as the 'first theory book that you can read and enjoy.' This was the first theory book I ever got. The book is split into two different sections. The first section talks about the 12 notes in the musical alphabet, distinguishing major, minor, and dominant 7th chords. He explains basic I IV V chord progressions, I vi ii V, and I V/V V I progressions (secondary dominants).
In the second half, he explains how notes are laid out on the fretboard, major scales, diatonic chord construction, the circle of 5ths, secondary dominants and backcycling, and minor keys.
The book is written in a very informal style, which makes it fun to read. Also it's nice that it's spiral bound. I've learned a lot from this book - even going back over it now for this review, I realize I should go back and re-read some of the material, now that I've been playing for a few years.
Unfortunately you have to get his next book
Music Principles for the Skeptical Guitarist, Volume 2 'The Fretboard' to learn about the CAGED system, but I think you'll learn a lot by reading it.

Best introduction to guitar theory, September 25, 2010
This review is from: Music Principles for the Skeptical Guitarist Vol. 1 : The Big Picture (Paperback)
Seems as though this may be out of print. Too bad because it really is the best introduction to guitar chords and theory. Makes most sense if you have some grasp of guitar chords and key signatures, but really want to know how they work. This is really the most accessible explanation of key signatures and chords, major and minor keys. Purchasing the second volume so definitely worth the money if you want to understand chord structure and the circle of fifths. I have found out that Bruce's books are available through Elderly Music and his website. Worth checking out his books on fingerstyle guitar and Travis picking.
