5.0 out of 5 stars The Best How To Book I've Encountered In Thirty Years
I've been writing about music for nearly thirty years for magazines such as Frets, Fast Folk, Billboard, Acoustic Guitar and Sing Out! the folk music magazine, and I've yet to find any "how to" book that even comes close to matching Mr. Poe's offering for its literate, engaging, and informed contribution to the genre. He is truly a songwriter's best friend. Here...

1.0 out of 5 stars Alex Matlin needs to get a life
Actually, I really like and use Mr. Poe's book (personally and as an instructor of a college level music business class). I would give it 4 to 5 stars. However, Mr. Alex Matlin posted the identical review for Mr. Poe's book entitled "Music Publishing, A Songwriter's Guide" on November 2, 2001. Granted, this may be a revised version of the earlier book, but if Mr...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best How To Book I've Encountered In Thirty Years, November 7, 2001

Roger Deitz (West Orange, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
I've been writing about music for nearly thirty years for magazines such as Frets, Fast Folk, Billboard, Acoustic Guitar and Sing Out! the folk music magazine, and I've yet to find any "how to" book that even comes close to matching Mr. Poe's offering for its literate, engaging, and informed contribution to the genre. He is truly a songwriter's best friend. Here is an articulate music publisher who can, himself, write rings around the rest of the crowd. Mr. Poe takes the aspiring songwriter into his confidence - you won't find many music publishers doing that! He gives the reader an insider's view and a leg up on all of the important issues a hopeful professional must learn in order to find success in this business of music. Unlike the other books on the subject, this one is fun to read, easy to follow and comprehend, and right on the mark as far as giving the reader the best information available. If, after finishing this book, the reader can't make some headway in the music business, he or she might need to sharpen another pencil and get back to work on their songwriting. All the business stuff is in the book, it's just a question of how much one is willing to learn and work with the knowledge Mr. Poe generously bestows.

5.0 out of 5 stars A TUNE OF SUCCESS, March 22, 2004

If I had to recommend just one book on music publishing, this would be it. The author elaborates on the origin and history of the music publishing business, and most importantly, thoroughly explains to you in detail what music publishing is, in addition to providing you with real life examples of how it works. You will have a much greater understanding and deeper appreciation of this complex, and lucrative facet of the industry once you've read this short, useful, well-written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very cost effective way to understand music publishing, April 27, 2003
By A Customer
This book was very attractive to me because of the price. I spent upwards of 70 dollars a book for similair music industry reference material, and this is one of the best books I own. This book, for the most part, has much of the information that "Music Publishing" by Tim Whitsett has, but is more expensive. Although Whitsett goes into a little more detail, you save 30 dollars. If you have the money, get both to have an arry of information.

The credentials that Poe has in writing "Music Publishing: A Song Writers Guide" is very amazing and the reader gets the understanding of the mistakes people have made in the publishiong aspect of music. I must warn you, that if you are not used to reading of the music industry you should not start off with this book. This is more for the people who have a little bit of general background about music in general. Other than that; a great, inexpensive resource on publishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Overview, April 16, 2006
If you want to understand music publishing - get this book. It starts with music publishing then and now, writing a song, getting it copyrighted and copyright law, how to go about getting it published, the royalties artists and publishers should receive, how you can start your own company, as well as the different organizations for artists and publsihers. It has information on ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC, the three performing rights societies, with a good synopsis on each. This book covers the nuts and bolts of the music publishing industry and any serious individual interested in learning more about this subject should have this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid overview of the publishing business, November 24, 2007
By
Krok (Bayside, NY USA) - See all my reviews
I have read several books on music publishing, and this is one of the best and most recent ones. What I particularly like about this book is that it is short, concise and easy to read. There's not a whole lot of legalese in here, just enough that is necessary for each topic. It's in plain english, so it's fairly easy to understand. It's also modern to the extent it addresses digital issues. Overall, a good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I Needed to Know, August 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I read this book as research for starting my own record label. I came away fully understanding music copyright. I also decided to do my own music publishing as a result of the book.

I made this book required reading for my colleagues. It's got interesting history of the publishing business, as well as number-crunching examples of money deals.

5.0 out of 5 stars clearly the best, December 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Just try to find a clearer, more concise book on music publishing. It's not at there. And while you're at it, pick up a copy of Sky Dog, his biography of Duane Allman. Randy Poe has vast experience in the music business, does his research and presents his topics in a crystal clear style.
