5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Very best Brass recordings EVER, and OUT-OF-PRINT???, February 19, 2006
This review is from: Music Of Renaissance, Baroque (Audio CD)
I must say, that I have heard dozens & probably hundreds of superb Brass ensemble recordings & performances, but this CD was certainly one of the very finest EVER. It is beyond belief that this could slip out-of-print; it really is sad. It deserves a fine reissuing every bit as much as the Boston/Philadelphian/CSO ensemble recording from the 1960s or the highlights of The Philip Jones Brass which are happily being released again. If you come accross a used copy of this one, whether on LP, Cassette, CD, ANY version, BUY IT for whatever you can afford, and listen to the precision & intensity on a good set of headphones. It is beautifully, elegantly and simply recorded & very well-"mic-ed". The engineers did as superb a job as the players in capturing depth & a reality of space where each player sits in the room. And there's plenty of Sheer Power, like the best performances of the Canadian Brass or the cream of anything the Legendary Philip Jones Brass Ensemble performed. A recording to be proud of.

5.0 out of 5 stars This outta be back in print!, October 31, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Music Of Renaissance, Baroque (Audio CD)
I wanted to get that CD for years. Well, I finally got it and listened to it. What satisfaction!

The American Brass Quintet has a bass trombone instead of a tuba (that's different). When I played this CD, I notice a very clear sound from the ensemble. This was recorded back in the days when digital recording was pretty much in it's infancy (1979). Besides the clear sound, the playing was excellent. Containing many short pieces lasting about a minute or two. Less than half lasted a little longer (the longest one timed at 4:19). All played very well.

Why in the world is this CD out of print??? If you're a fan of Canadian, Empire and other such brass ensembles, then get this one... if you can.
