What can you do when your love's not true?,

One of the best things to come out of the lounge music revival of the 1990s was the rediscovery of Esquivel. Esquivel released several albums of instrumental pop music back in the '50s and '60s, but unlike many of his contemporaries in the field of instrumental pop, his music is actually interesting. He experimented with oddball instrumentation and weird stereo effects, which make his records very fun to listen to (not to mention that he was an excellent arranger). This CD was the second compilation album of his material. It's not quite as good as the first one (Space-Age Bachelor Pad Music), but it's still very good. The material is a bit weaker the second time around, but it still features some great tracks, like "Granada" and "Question Mark". The lounge music revival may be over, but Esquivel is still worth listening to. It's nice that he got to experience the renewed interest in his work before he died.

Bar-None really did a wonderful job on the booklet for this release. The tune selection is really fine as well. This is a great way to introduce yourself to Esquivel's world. But be prepared to want MORE once you become ensnared by the music!

This artist has an imaginitive approach to arrangements in his music, using
an array of instruments and sounds to give the songs a new dimension. A real fun trip into space age pop. |
