In late April of 2013, I was persuaded by friends to watch the final few episodes of season 12 of "American Idol"--the sort of thing I would never in a million years have imagined I would ever do. The reason was Candice Glover, whom my friends described as "a lovely young woman with an absolutely gorgeous, heart stoppingly beautiful voice." Now, I never, ever, watch competitions; I tuned in once just so that I could say I had done so.

And I was instantly hooked. Then only 22, Glover exhibited a poise, intelligence, and maturity far beyond those of the other finalists (although, truth be told, all were superb musicians). Her voice, powerful and achingly clear, gripped me the first time I heard it, and has never let go. After that first broadcast, I stayed up until the wee hours pressing redial to vote for her, something I also would never have imagined myself doing, only days before.

With each subsequent hearing, as the finalists dwindled down in those final weeks, I grew more and more impressed. In the big band themed episode, Glover displayed a musical sensibility, and ability, spanning several generations and genres. Long before she actually won the competition, I was a confirmed fan.

Despite my admiration for Ms. Glover's prodigious talent, I became concerned when the release of "Music Speaks" was delayed not once, but twice, fearing the delays did not bode well for the project. (At one point, I grew tired of waiting, and even canceled my original Amazon order, I'm ashamed to say.)

Now, listening to the debut in its entirety for the first time, I am happy to report that my fears were unfounded. This spectacular album is more than worth the wait.

I loved her on Idol.. I really don't care for the choice of songs on this album.. if they would have put all the songs she sang on Idol I would have loved it.. I thought they could have done a lot better... she has such a beautiful voice ... I still love her and maybe her next album she can pick the songs.. I will buy her next album.. and hope the songs will suit her better.. love you Candice.. I will keep listening and hoping you will put out that perfect album..

Candice Glover, in my opinion, has an exceptional voice. However, this album is overproduced and mediocre. I'm sure we each have our own wishes about what she should sing. My wish is that, with time, she would develop into an exceptional jazz singer; one who would be remembered for decades to come. Playing at the Blue Note is much different than playing at a huge civic center, but the trade off is that she can develop fans who will support her for as long as she performs. That path won't buy her an uber mansion in Beverly Hills or Malibu, but could create a real legacy.

To me, Music Speaks is disposable music like so much else we hear. Hey Candice, I want to hear your voice prominently displayed within a setting of music worth remembering. I do not want studio effects, tuning, over sweetening, excessive compression, etc. Just your honest voice, sung in a comfortable range, with minimal vocal gymnastics will make me feel just fine and, I think, many other people will feel the same.

I feel like she sings from my heart. Her vocals, her messages, and skills are proof she is doing on this planet what she was sent here to do. I got the album on itunes for download and the CD from Amazon.com.

Anyone who watched Idol the season that Candice won the crown already knew this girl can just flat out sing. However, we've seen so many ultra-talented artists struggle to make the transition from "super talented singer" to "successful music artist". Well, I have to tell you, Candice makes a compelling case that she will be one of the few that successfully make that difficult transition. This album is impressive!

The lyrics, the production quality, her voice, her delivery / touch and the general vibe you get when enjoying this album will instantly grow on fans of pop / R&B music. It blends her natural soul/R&B with sounds of modern pop (even a little reggae) into a musical experience that has you wanting to hear the next track to see how good the track will be. It feels far more like a 2nd or 3rd release than a freshmen release. I was thoroughly entertained, and for a freshman release, all I can say is WOW. This girl is off to a strong start.

This is probably the most self-assured AI album ever. It's self-assured period! It's what I love about Candice. She knows what she is about and will sing her truth. Her licks and riffs are second to none and although she utilizes them in abundance, they never feel unnecessary. They're a joy listening to. They're interchangeably playful, expressive, and genius. She should know that she has the talent that reminds you of the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Mary J. Blige, so Candice should always aim high. In this album she displays her talents to the hilt. She wants to appeal to the urban market, but her strengths lie in jazz. One hopes she will display some writing talent in the future. And while the materials in the album are not the greatest, it almost doesn't matter much because she can sing anything. Seriously, I wish this were a double album. I could listen to her all day.
