Well first let me say I felt the need to write this review because the first person who reviewed this set was very unfair with the one star rating they gave this album. For those of you who aren't familiar with the SF Jazz Collective they're an eight piece band made up of some of jazz music's biggest & brightest stars as well as up and coming talent, they then take a recognized master's music & each member provides arrangements of said material & brings an original composition in to perform. Some of the previous music done was last years take on Horace Silver's music & McCoy Tyner in 09 & Wayne Shorter in 08.

This set tackles the legendary Stevie Wonder's music. The band recently switched out it's ranks, performing here is Eric Harland on drums, Matt Penman on bass, Edward Simone on piano, Stefon Harris on vibes, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Mark Turner on tenor sax, Robin Eubanks on trombone & Miguel Zenon on alto sax.

In my opinion this is a five star album for the playing & interesting arrangements. If your looking for this music to sound like Stevie's original recorded versions then you'll definitely be alittle disappointed because that isn't what the Collective aims to do, these are the groups takes on Stevie using his music more as a point of departure or a spring board for improvisation rather than simply covering the original arrangements with a jazz band.

I personally would have liked to of heard more tunes from Stevie's Innervisions album of which there is only one, the mellow "Visions" , no Too High or Living For The City unfortunately. Instead you get several tunes from Songs In The Key Of Life like the opening "Sir Duke".

I had the privilege of seeing the SF Jazz Collective live recently, and the experience was nothing short of magical. A number of folks in the audience left at intermission, and I can only surmise they did so because they were expecting faithful renditions of Steve Wonder's music, rather than world class jazz based on or inspired by it. Those of us who stayed for the entire show heard music of a quality that's truly rare created by eight of the world's best jazz musicians. We also experienced the warmth and personality of each musician, as they took turns speaking with the audience and introducing the songs, each of which was arranged by a different artist.

This three CD set does a surprisingly good job of capturing the feel of the SF Jazz Collective live. The collection will no doubt find a place in my regular jazz listening rotation. Some of the arrangements are more challenging than others, and if that's not your thing, you won't enjoy those as much, but if you appreciate the finest in jazz, you ought to give this set a chance because your time and effort will be rewarded.

The SF Jazz collective add their sublime touch to Stevie's genius especially on You are the Sunshine of my life...
