4.0 out of 5 stars Still great listening June 6, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I listened to this album a lot back in the '60s. I really enjoy the brass and sax throughout many of the selections. Even though "The Stripper" is the most well known track, my favorite, by far, is St. James Infirmary. Usually performed as a slow, meloncholy, bluesy rendition, David Rose ramps it up quite a bit and it ends up as the best version I have ever heard. It's just great listening, to the point that the overtones of the music are soon disregarded. The combination of the music genre and energy that David Rose's Orchestra provides has enticed me to listen to this CD many times, and will do many times more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not One But Two Albums! August 2, 2010
By CHL
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This CD contains both the "David Rose and His Orchestra Play the Stripper and Other Fun Songs for the Family" and the "More! More! More! Music of the Stripper and Other Fun Songs for the Family" albums. The tracks are in the original order that they appeared on the albums.

The songs are mostly classics from the 1930's and 1940's like "Mood Indigo," "Black and Tan Fantasy," St. James Infirmary," and "Sophisticated Lady."

The style is somewhere between Rose's usual smooth big band and a jazzy nightclub sound. The sound closely resembles Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn Theme." As the title suggests, much of the music could have been (and probably was) used in strip clubs in the 1960's.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARILY EVOCATIVE March 13, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you buy this thinking that it will have some kind of erotic appeal, you will possibly be disappointed. Personally (and this may be a generational thing), when I think of superb music for strippers, I think of AC/DC's "The Girls Got Rhythm," and "Get It Hot," or Motley Crue's "She's Got Looks That Kill." That is music which just clearly fuels the kind of Vegas-style debauchery that I think of when I think of a great strip show.

This, however, is simply superb "night club" music. I can't believe there are not a thousand 5-star reviews of this album. This is more about "smoky sax" than it is "smokin' sex." This music is so evocative of big city glamour that is has me looking at the calendar to see if I can fit in a vacation to Chicago or NYC in the next few months. It has me thinking of Sam Slade working the streets, and James Bond working the room. Yes, you can visualize some beautiful babes swaying around lustfully on the stage under the warm glow of colored lights, but there is a casual elegance to the ambience, nothing particularly naughty. This is music from a more civilized age where fornication is only vaguely implied.

I will file this in my soundtracks collection, even though I do not believe it was originally created to be a soundtrack to any movie. But it seems like it should have been, as it captures the essence of, say, some dangerous character as he wanders the streets, alleyways, and swanky clubs of a big city on a cold night as he attempts to unravel some sinister mystery, one which involves a dead stranger, a suitcase full of loot, and a beautiful babe. Visual clichés like that readily flow through your head when you hear this. The songs here are as cosmopolitan as music can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars KEEP IT ON December 7, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I don't know what prompted me to buy this, but glad I did--when you are feeling "Down", just play this CD and you are up and runing for the day. (I Will not discuss the night.) It's a fun CD, the music a bit dated (classics) but play it in sound proof suroundings, the neighbors might hear you yelling Take It Off, which is a lot better than yelling 'Put It On". Dim the lights, relax, and let the music and your imagination do the rest. Great listening, and it might be great for an exercise music CD, (using the muscles in ways they haven't been used for awhile)--Just have fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Strippers May 12, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this for the song, "The Stripper," which you'll recognize immediately. I was delighted to find out that the whole album is great! It's that kind of gritty jazz that you think of when you read Mickey Spillane or some pulp fiction detective novel. I had previously purchased the soundtrack for "Peter Gunn" by Henry Mancini. The two albums fit together so well that I made a playlist entitled "Gritty." Try it out. It's a lot of fun.
