Editorial Reviews

It seems Hal Mooney is one of the composers and arrangers that many people seem to forget or overlook, this is a real shame and a mistake! Jasmine have now rectified this! This superb collection showcases Hal Mooney's breath-taking arrange across four superb albums 'Any Time', 'An Affair To Remember', 'Woodwinds and Percussion' and 'Dreamland USA'. If you think 'High Noon' couldn't be altered much from the original then guess again! Hal moved on to Universal Studios in the late sixties where he worked on many big TV shows such as Columbo, The Rockford Files, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. This is a great compilation for those familiar with Hal Mooney's work, and for those that have overlooked him, this is a real find that must be purchased.

Excellent musicianship. The late Hal Mooney produced a number of LP's,
and had a great deal of experience writing arrangements in the big band era.
it does seem that some of the best singers and arrangers, seem to have gotten
their start during that glorious era.

It is a collection of hits as well as some music which is not common to hear. At any rate it is a good mixture of styles.

If you are a fan of orchestral music arranged in the traditional pre-rock style of the 1950s, run, don't walk, and get this collection! Jasmine has put together a re-release of four albums by arranger-conductor Hal Mooney that exhibit Hal's wonderful arranging skills. One album is a collection of originals named after each element of the zodiac (Mooney is an excellent composer, too); another album is a collection of music from films (including an improbable, but very logical sounding swing arrangement of the theme from "High Noon" ("Do not forsake me, oh my darlin' on this our wedding day") and a nice version of "Ruby"; an album of "exotica" sounds featuring woodwinds and percussion (in my opinion the best tunes from this album are Morton Gould's "Pavanne" and "Speak Low"); and a collection of danceable tunes commemorating locations in the USA (like "Moonlight in Vermont", which is also excellently arranged). Again, if you like this type of music, get this collection!

Two out of the four albums on this CD have been previously released by Vocalion which I have. My main reason for buying this set is DREAMLAND U.S.A. Hal takes many of the overworked selections in this album and breathes new life into them. They sound as fresh to me today as when they were recorded nealy 50 years ago. All albums are in STEREO, a plus when one considers that Jasmine doesn`t always do stereo.

Hal Mooney was a pianist, arranger, composer and musical director, and his musical talents are showcased in this great compilation of four of his Mercury albums, all in stereo. The first came out in 1957 under the title “Musical Horoscopes”, but was reissued a couple of years later with the less memorable title of “Time Out” (possibly to avoid confusion with Dewey Bergman’s 1952 album of the same title). These musical interpretations of the signs of the Zodiac provide ample opportunity to exploit the instrumental palette, and the result is a delightful suite which inclines towards the light classics genre. “An Affair to Remember” was a 1959 album for which Mooney arranged a number of stage and/or screen tunes, but the track list fails to specify their sources, which are as follows:

“Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” came from “Oklahoma”
“Hey There” came from “The Pajama Game”
“Anna” came from the Italian film “El Negro Zambon” (Anna)
“I’ll be Seeing You” came from the revue “Right this Way”
“Ruby” was the soundtrack theme for “Ruby Gentry”
“But Not for Me” came from “Girl Crazy”
“An Affair to Remember” came from the film of that name
“They Can’t Take That Away from Me” came from “Shall We Dance?”
“I Could Write a Book” came from “Pal Joey”
“Moonglow” was heard in “Picnic”, although written 22 years earlier
“My Foolish Heart” came from the film of that name –
as did “High Noon” (also known as “Do Not Forsake Me”)

The second CD contains two 1961 albums, and “Woodwinds and Percussion” gives the opportunity to hear a number of tunes recast for those two sections of the orchestra. Most will be familiar, but the inclusion of Morton Gould’s “Pavanne” and Edward Claypoole’s “Ragging the Scale” deserve particular mention.
