Book Description

March 1, 2005
Many players are intimidated by music theory because most music theory methods are written for classically trained musicians and require the reader to know standard music notation. The method outlined in this useful guide is considered by many to be the most user-friendly music theory method ever. The book covers blues, rock, folk, country, pop, and jazz — with no hard-to-read standard notation included, and comes with a 74-minute CD. It's perfect for any instrument, any level of player, and is an essential tool for would-be songwriters.

5.0 out of 5 stars I finally get it!, June 16, 2005

Great book! I've been playing harmonica and singing in a rock band for several years, playing and singing by ear mostly. While this has worked, it's also really limiting in terms of understanding what I'm doing, growing musically, and writing songs. I don't have a lot of attention-span for learning music theory, so I've been frustrated with past attempts. This book has made a real difference. It's really accessible and easy to read, yet filled with valuable info. He has a great style of instruction such that the info just makes sense. I just ordered his harmonica theory book too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, November 27, 2010

This is a great book. If you are interesting in learning basic music theory this is the book to get. It was exactly what I was looking for. I found it easy to read and easy to understand. This book will teach you the letter names of notes, what is an octave, what comprises a chromatic scale. It also teaches you the differences between the Major, Minor, Blues, and Pentatonic scales. You will also learn the Major, minor, seventh, and minor 7 chords. I highly recommend it.

Note: If you are looking for a book to learn notes and rests values and meter (e.g whole, half, quarter, eighth notes, 4/4, etc), this is not the book to get.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, basic information, September 8, 2008

If you want to learn more about music, but are worried about jumping right in over your head, this is a good place to start. He covers all the basic things that many other books just assume that everyone already knows. Things like 12 notes in a chromatic scale, how sharps and flats fit in, etc. I could read music a little and play piano a little when I was a kid and wondered if I could pick up music again as an adult. This got me going without throwing me in the deep end.
