Great book! I've been playing harmonica and singing in a rock band for several years, playing and singing by ear mostly. While this has worked, it's also really limiting in terms of understanding what I'm doing, growing musically, and writing songs. I don't have a lot of attention-span for learning music theory, so I've been frustrated with past attempts. This book has made a real difference. It's really accessible and easy to read, yet filled with valuable info. He has a great style of instruction such that the info just makes sense. I just ordered his harmonica theory book too.

This is a great book. If you are interesting in learning basic music theory this is the book to get. It was exactly what I was looking for. I found it easy to read and easy to understand. This book will teach you the letter names of notes, what is an octave, what comprises a chromatic scale. It also teaches you the differences between the Major, Minor, Blues, and Pentatonic scales. You will also learn the Major, minor, seventh, and minor 7 chords. I highly recommend it.
Note: If you are looking for a book to learn notes and rests values and meter (e.g whole, half, quarter, eighth notes, 4/4, etc), this is not the book to get.

If you want to learn more about music, but are worried about jumping right in over your head, this is a good place to start. He covers all the basic things that many other books just assume that everyone already knows. Things like 12 notes in a chromatic scale, how sharps and flats fit in, etc. I could read music a little and play piano a little when I was a kid and wondered if I could pick up music again as an adult. This got me going without throwing me in the deep end.

If you are a guitarist or bassist with little or no music theory background, put this book on your shopping/wish list. This book is a very easy and fairly entertaining read. You will definitely come away with a firm foundation in music theory. No, this book isn't an 'everything you need to know' type of book, but for the six and four stringed instrumentalist, it is quite close. The included CD is quite useful and supplements the book quite well. For the price you are getting a great deal.

Hard to understand,
This review is from: Music Theory Made Easy (Paperback)
I bought this book hoping that it would teach me a little theory a little easier than lets say something the size of war and peace. I found it to be hard to read and understand.
