This book is perfect for someone who wants to dig deeper into older music and understand the compositional concepts of it. This book starts out with a chapter teaching the basics of notation. Then the author goes through the different types of music made under the middle ages, the renaissance and the baroque. It is all very thorough and if you read this book carefully and do the included exercises you are bound to have a firm understanding of these parts of musical history.

More than just a history and theory book, this is a great book for composers who wish to get new ideas from looking at music from a different perspective (kind of what Debussy and Webern did for example).

As this is volume 1, I deeply recommend the second volume for a complete view of history. The second book is also even better for composers as it teaches you some of the mainstream compositional techniques of the 20th century.
