Book Description

0198162766 978-0198162766 February 13, 1992 2
This book was first published in 1978 and was the first of its kind to analyze the effect of music therapy on the development of the autistic child. It contained detailed accounts of the music therapy techniques found to be effective with different types of autistic children, and illustrated these with case studies drawn from the author's original research. This new edition retains all the text of the first and adds three new chapters, reflecting the depth of research music therapy has received over the last ten years and its important position within the whole therapy of autistic children. Written by Auriel Warwick, a former student of Juliette Alvin, these chapters describe how parents can be involved with their autistic children in the therapeutic process, and illustrates the problems and rewards found in the musical and personal relationships which evolve.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This well known text, recently reprinted, should be of interest to both parents and professionals working with children with autism. Ifound it interesting and heart-warming to read. This book is definitely worth reprinting and with the additional materials should be very helpful to people involved with children with autism.' Vivian Howarth, Communication, Vol. 26, March 1992

'the book is full of wise, compassionate insights and guidance concerning autism in general ... A book well-worth re-reading.' Jean Eisler, Music Journal, February 1993

'It is very heartwarming to read of the successes and the manner of writing appeals very much to the emotions of the reader ... it contains very interesting accounts of particular children and the ways in which two therapists work.' Penny Lacey, Mental Handicap, Vol 21 June 1993

This review is from: Music Therapy for the Autistic Child (Paperback)
This book was recommended to me all over the place when I wanted to know more about music therapy. As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum who was very interested in music therapy, I did not find it so helpful or hopeful, for that matter. Dorita Berger's book, Music Therapy, Sensory Integration and the Autistic Child was very good.
